This award was established in 2025-2026 to recognize smha's top female on-ice officials.  the cianna murray SMHA female Referee of the Year Award winner is selected annually by the SMHA Referees Division Committee.

The winner of this award receives a framed certificate from SMHA along with a pair of new bauer skates and a custom referee's bag courtesy of Al Anderson's Source for Sports.  

the award is named after cianna murray, a member of smha's referees committee and one of the top female referees in the world!

about cianna:

- Has officiated women's hockey in two olympic winter games - 2022 & 2026
- officiated the gold medal game between canada and usa in the 2026 olympic games
- has officiated women's hockey in five iihf world championships
- has officiated american hockey league (ahl) games 
- has officiated professional women's hockey league (pwhl) games
- was the first female offical to ever work hockey canada's centennial cup (national junior a men's championship)
- was the second female referee ever to work western hockey league (whl) games
- is an active member of smha's referees committee, overseeing female officials development
