At Weyburn Soccer, every program we offer — Community and Competitive — is intentionally designed using a science-informed approach and aligned with Canada Soccer’s Grassroots Standards and Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) framework. Our structures, session lengths, training frequency, competition formats, and coaching methods are based on how children and youth learn, develop, and thrive, not on short-term results.
We believe players develop best in environments that are age-appropriate, game-based, and supported by evidence-based practice in physical literacy, sport science, and child development.
Community soccer is the foundation of Weyburn Soccer and is open to all players, regardless of experience or background. These programs are built around Canada Soccer’s Grassroots Standards, ensuring that young players receive developmentally appropriate training that prioritizes enjoyment, confidence, and long-term engagement in the game.
Community programs are designed to:
Follow age-specific session lengths and formats recommended by Canada Soccer
Use game-based learning and guided discovery, supported by sport science
Develop the four corners of development (technical, physical, psychological, social)
Create safe, inclusive, and positive environments for every player
Community soccer is ideal for players who want to learn, play, and grow in a supportive environment without the added time, travel, or performance demands of competitive programming.
Community age groups:
U5, U7, U9, U11, U13, U15, U17
Competitive soccer is designed for players who are ready for increased training frequency and competitive challenge, while still remaining grounded in science-informed development principles. These programs are not about early selection or winning at all costs — they are about providing the right challenge at the right time.
Competitive programs emphasize:
Training volumes and intensities aligned with player growth and maturation
Competition formats that support learning and decision-making
Evaluations led by the Technical Director to ensure appropriate placement
Development before results, supported by Canada Soccer’s LTPD model
Competitive teams participate in league play, friendly matches, and tournaments where appropriate, with structures that remain flexible and responsive to player needs.
Competitive age groups:
U9, U11, U13, U15, U17
With the addition of the Forge Spring Soccer League, Weyburn Soccer is offering greater flexibility at the U9 age group, while still adhering to Canada Soccer Grassroots Standards.
U9 players may register in Community OR Competitive soccer
Players are not required to participate in both programs
Both pathways are science-informed and developmentally appropriate
This model allows families to choose the environment that best supports their child’s readiness, interest, and overall development.
Across all programs, Weyburn Soccer is committed to:
Evidence-based training design
Age-appropriate session structure and competition formats
Player-first decision making
Alignment with Canada Soccer’s Grassroots Standards and LTPD principles
Our goal is not to rush development, but to protect it — ensuring players build strong foundations, enjoy the game, and remain engaged for life.
