evalutions overview

NWW Community Hockey's Evaluations are not tryouts, but an assessment of a player’s overall ability and hockey sense. The goal is to determine which division each player is best suited to play in.

  • Player groupings for Evaluation ice times will be communicated through TeamSnap as soon as they are available. Your patience is appreciated as the Evaluations Committee works to collect and review evaluation data.
  • All players are expected to attend all their assigned Evaluation sessions.  Players who are injured/ill, and not able to participate in the Evaluation process, or not able to participate in an Evaluation session, will be required to let the Age Group Coordinator know that the player is not able to participate.
  • Injured and absent players will be treated as fairly as possible. The Evaluation and Team Formation Committee(s) will make decisions on the placement of players who are injured or absent.

2025-2026 Evaluations Manual Key Updates

  • Addition of 24 Hour Rule for any parent concerns
  • Minimum number of game Evaluations for Coach Applicants: All Head Coach and Assistant Coach applicants must evaluate a minimum of 20 games (both Small Area and Full-Ice) to be considered during coach selection.
    • Rationale:
      • To ensure fair, accurate, and consistent player placement, it is essential that all Coach applicants evaluate at least the minimum number of games as required by the Evaluations process.
      • Meeting this commitment ensures we gather the most complete and reliable data set possible, allowing placement decisions to be based on a broad, balanced view of each player’s abilities.
      • Consistent Evaluator participation strengthens the integrity of the process and supports the development of teams that are best positioned for success.
  • Addition of Small Area Game (SAG) sessions at U13 and U15
  • Addition of Exhibition Games at U13 to inform U13AA team formation
  • Updated scoring matrix for SAG and Full-Ice Games: Now 7-point instead of 5-point
    • Rationale:
      • Using a 7-point scoring matrix provides greater accuracy and fairness in player Evaluations.
      • The additional scoring options allow Evaluators to better differentiate between players with similar skill levels, reducing the likelihood of ties and forced groupings.
      • A 7-point scale captures more nuance in performance, leading to a more detailed and reliable data set.
      • This improved granularity supports more precise player placement and ensures teams are formed based on the most accurate assessment of individual abilities.
  • Clarity added for Evaluators on player size in body checking
  • Clarity on Game Play and Shift Length (previously only shared with Evaluation Coordinators)
  • Updated communication protocols — all Evaluations communication now through TeamLinkt
