ABOUT OUR PROGRAM: PAST & PRESENT

History of Soccer in Fort Saskatchewan

Soccer has deep roots in Fort Saskatchewan, dating back to 1974 with the launch of the Fort Saskatchewan Minor Outdoor Soccer program. It was one of two sports governed by the Fort Saskatchewan Minor Sports Association (FSMSA). In 1996, the community expanded its offerings to include indoor soccer, initially practicing in local gyms like the old Jail gym, with games held at facilities in south and west Edmonton.

In December 2013, Fort Saskatchewan Outdoor and Indoor Soccer merged to form a single organization: Fort Saskatchewan Soccer. This unification aimed to better serve the growing soccer community while still allowing individual teams to retain their unique identities.

By 2017, the Executive Committee recognized the need for a shared identity across all teams. After a month-long naming contest and 25 submissions, the name Fort Saskatchewan Arsenal was chosen. The name pays tribute to the 1875 NWMP Fort—an integral part of the city’s heritage. Today, our U9–U19 teams play under the Fort Saskatchewan Arsenal banner, while our U5–U7 in-house program is known as Junior Arsenal.

Fort Sask Soccer Today

Fort Saskatchewan Soccer supports approximately 900 players annually, split between indoor and outdoor seasons. The program is overseen by one full-time paid administrator and a 10-member volunteer executive committee, with each season requiring 60–80 volunteer coaches and many additional behind-the-scenes volunteers. The commitment of our volunteers is the foundation of our success.

Our Commitment

At Fort Saskatchewan Soccer, we’re more than a sports organization—we’re a community. From grassroots programs to competitive club teams, our goal is to create an inclusive and positive environment where players, coaches, and families thrive together, united by their passion for the beautiful game.
