Coach Code of Conduct

Fort Saskatchewan Soccer – Coach Code of Conduct

Coaches play a vital role in the personal and athletic development of young athletes. The coach–athlete relationship is one of trust and influence, and with that comes a responsibility to lead with integrity, fairness, and respect.

This Code of Conduct provides guidance to ensure coaches foster a safe, positive, and respectful environment that supports both athletic performance and personal growth.

1. Lead with Integrity

  • Treat all athletes fairly, respectfully, and without bias
  • Respect athlete dignity — focus on performance, not personal criticism
  • Maintain a high personal standard and always model professionalism
  • Represent Fort Saskatchewan Soccer, its leagues, and governing bodies positively in all settings

Do not publicly criticize fellow coaches, FSS, EMSA, or governing bodies — especially in front of youth or the media

2. Uphold Professional Conduct

  • No alcohol, drugs, or smoking when working with athletes or in their presence
  • Never condone or promote the use of banned or performance-enhancing substances
  • Avoid profane, harassing, or offensive language
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries at all times

3. Prioritize Player Safety and Well-Being

  • Ensure a safe environment for every player
  • Make decisions regarding injury and return-to-play with the athlete’s long-term health as the top priority
  • Teach safe practices and promote responsible physical development

4. Respect the Game and Others

  • Show respect to referees, opponents, and all participants — in both victory and defeat
  • Encourage players to play by the rules and uphold the spirit of the game
  • Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and accountability

5. Engage in Continued Growth

  • Commit to ongoing professional development and learning as a coach
  • Stay current with best practices, league rules, and policies
  • Support and encourage player participation in FSS programs and initiatives

6. Communicate Openly and Respectfully

  • Maintain open, constructive communication with players and their families
  • Involve parents or guardians in key decisions relating to player development
  • Respect and follow the chain of command for addressing concerns or disputes

7. Avoid Conflicts of Interest

  • Act in the best interests of all players and teams
  • Avoid situations — or the appearance — where personal interests may interfere with coaching responsibilities

8. Accountability

Failure to follow this Code of Conduct, or any rules or policies from Fort Saskatchewan Soccer, EMSA, or governing bodies, may result in disciplinary action.

By leading with integrity, fairness, and respect, coaches help create a soccer environment where young athletes can thrive — on and off the field.
