WESA COACH SQUAD

See Yourself In It
Some members start by volunteering. Others begin by scorekeeping, helping at Field Days, supporting a team, or stepping into a 2nd Coach role.  Coaching in WESA grows through contribution, learning, and experience.

WESA has laid out a Pathway to assist members integrate coaching into their WESA experience.  By combining Experience with education from WESA Coaching Essentials and the NCCP courses, all members of our community can experience slo-pitch softball as an athlete and coach.

Coaching in WESA is something you grow into.

The journey isn’t linear—and it doesn’t look the same for everyone. But there is a common path with observable milestones.

The CAC is associated with both Softball Canada and Softball BC.

(from their website) The Coaching Association of Canada educates and certifies coaches, and celebrates their achievements at all levels of sport. Through its coach education, research, and advocacy programs, the CAC unites partners and stakeholders in its commitment to raise the skills and stature of coaches, and ultimately to expand their reach and influence. 

WESA Coach Squad helps members become confident, capable softball coaches.

Coach development combines nationally recognized NCCP training, WESA-specific education, practical coaching experience, and mentorship.

WESA doesn't expect coaches to arrive knowing how to coach. We provide a pathway to learn, practice, and grow.

The Coach Squad Pathway recognizes first steps, learning, service, experience, and leadership. Some are earned through clinics—others through showing up, supporting others, and stepping into new roles.

FIRST BASE — Learn
WESA rules and responsibilities • NCCP Safe Sport training

SECOND BASE — Coach
Assistant/2nd Coach experience • NCCP Emergency Action Plan • Participate in practices and player development  • NCCP Making Ethical Decisions

THIRD BASE — Lead
Team Manager experience • Draft/team-building knowledge • Skills Questions and placement • Inclusion and fair play • Mentor developing coaches

HOME RUN — League Builder
Experienced WESA coach • Mentor other Coach Squad members • Contribute to WESA Athletics • Clinics/Open Practices/coach development 


How Clinics Fit In

Clinics support the journey—but they’re only one part of it.

Members grow through experience, mentoring, scorekeeping, volunteering, and leadership—not just attending sessions.

How Team Leadership Works in WESA

Each team is supported by a Coaching Pair:

  • Managing Head Coach
  • 2nd Coach — supporting Coach either being mentored or bringing experience to back up the Head Coach

Together, they support players, manage team needs, and help create a positive, inclusive environment.  New coaches are encouraged to step in. Experienced coaches are expected to support and mentor others.

Additional Assistant Coach - each team is encouraged to take on an additional Assistant Coach to give an opportunity to a team member by assigning responsibilities while being supported by Team Leadership.
