OUR HISTORY

Welcome to the Saskatoon Minor Basketball Association (SMBA), where our mission to inspire and empower youth through basketball has shaped Saskatoon’s sports community for decades. Established in 1952, SMBA has been at the forefront of fostering inclusivity, skill development, and a lifelong love for the game. Our league has provided opportunities for youth, coaches, and referees, helping build the vibrant basketball culture that thrives in Saskatoon today.

Originally known as the Saskatoon Church Basketball League, we embraced the SMBA name in 1985 to reflect our broader community focus. Throughout our history, we have prioritized the principles of participation, development, and sportsmanship, creating a strong foundation for players to grow both on and off the court. These values have guided countless athletes to excel at the high school, university, and even professional levels, while also equipping them with life skills that extend beyond the game.

We are proud of the positive impact SMBA has had on generations of Saskatoon residents and remain committed to making basketball accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable for all.

LEAGUE OVERVIEW

The SMBA is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing youth basketball programs for players aged 5–18 across Saskatoon and surrounding areas. We welcome participants of all skill levels, from those new to the game to experienced athletes.

At the heart of our mission is the development of youth through basketball. By following Basketball Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model, we ensure players are building the right skills at the right stages. Our programs emphasize skill development, sportsmanship, and fun in a supportive and inclusive environment, where every player has the opportunity to thrive.

The SMBA also values the growth and development of coaches and referees, providing them with resources and training to succeed. We collaborate closely with Community Associations to make basketball accessible for everyone, ensuring the sport remains an integral part of Saskatoon’s community fabric.
