League Information and Regulations
General Information
- Each team is guaranteed 16 games plus one playoff game.
- The Fall/Winter Team Registration fee is $2,750 + $150 default deposit. (including taxes and Basketball Manitoba insurance coverage). .
- All games are played at the Duckworth Centre Gym, 400 Spence Street.
- The league offers the best per-game value in the city, plays at the nicest, newly-renovated facilities, and offers great prizes.
Scheduling
- Fall/winter league games are played on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings (start times between 7:00 and 10:00 PM and Sundays (start times between 10:00 AM and 7:30 PM).
- Teams can book off specific dates (ex. Superbowl Sunday, Valentine's Day) and select a night they prefer not to play. If you have any additional schedule requests that were not included at the time of registration, please email leagues@uwinnipeg.ca.
- Requests are welcome but not guaranteed. The League Scheduler will accommodate as many requests as possible.
Team Names
- Each team is responsible for ensuring their team name and uniform design are appropriate. Team names and uniform designs should not include swear words, blatant sexual references, derogatory language, or any words or sentiments that are considered offensive. If the WBL deems a team name or uniform design as inappropriate, the team captain will be notified that they are required to change them.
Division Alignments
- The goal of divisional alignments is to ensure parity within a division so that all teams have a fun and fair season.
- Team captains may choose from a drop-down list of divisions at registration; however the League Coordinators reserve the right to align divisions at their discretion to ensure parity.
- For the Fall/Winter season, divisions will be realigned after all teams have played 6 games. Divisional realignment generally involves the top-seeded team in each division moving up one division and the bottom-seeded team in each division moving down one division. However, the League Coordinators reserve the right to re-align divisions as they see fit to achieve parity and ensure an enjoyable season for all teams.
Playing on Multiple Teams
- Players will be allowed to play on multiple teams however the League Coordinators reserve the right to place teams in divisions based on the caliber of players on the roster.
- Players may not play on two teams in the same division. If, after divisional re-alignment, a player is rostered on two teams in the same division, they must select one team and will be removed from the roster of the other team.
- Team captains are strongly encouraged to notify the League Coordinators if they have players playing on multiple teams at registration to avoid divisional and scheduling conflicts.
Rosters and ID Checks
- Team captains must submit a team roster prior to the first game of the season.
- Team captains may add players to their roster during the season by contacting the League Coordinators or by logging in to their Fusion IM account.
- Current USPORTS players are prohibited from playing or subbing on a team. MCAC and CCAA players are allowed to play and their teams will be placed accordingly.
- Photo ID (name and picture on the same card) may be requested by a scorekeeper or league coordinator at any time and must be produced before being eligible to play. See Winnipeg Basketball League Rules for late arrival procedures.
Defaults
- See Winnipeg Basketball League Rules for default procedures.
- A team that defaults a game will forfeit their $150 default deposit.
- A team that defaults three games in one season will be removed from the league without refund.
Rescheduling a Game:
- The league will do their best to reschedule a game if the following criteria is met:
- More than 48 hours notice is given to the league.
- The rescheduled date works for both teams involved..
- Rescheduling a game is not guaranteed, but we will do our best if that criteria is met.
Playoffs
- All teams qualify for playoffs and are guaranteed one playoff game.
- Playoffs will consist of a single-elimination bracket system, based on the number of teams in each division.
- Each player must play in five (5) regular season games to be eligible for playoffs. (2 games for Spring League) Each player's number of games played can be viewed on the team statistics page at any time. Do not wait until game-time of your first play-off game to address any statistical inaccuracies.
- ​Exceptions may be made based on compassionate circumstances, but the league must be emailed prior to your first playoff game so League Coordinators can discuss and make an informed decision.
Standings and tiebreakers
- If two teams are tied in the final standings, the following tie-breakers will apply:
- Head to head record
- Head to head point differential (if the tied teams have played more than once)
- Overall point differential
- If three or more teams are tied in the final standings, the following tie-breakers will apply:
- Head to head record IF all teams have played each other the same number of times
- Head to head point differential IF all teams have played each other the same number of times
- Overall point differential
- Partial tie-breakers: When three or more teams are tied, if a single team can be removed from the tie breaker at any step, leaving two tied teams, the tie-breaker will revert back to step 1 of the appropriate list for the remaining teams
