2025/2026 Season Outstanding Volunteer Nominations
Subzero is run by volunteers who give their time, energy, and talents to deliver our programming. Each year our coaches, board members, and parents all come together to serve our athletes. We couldn't do what we do without the support and dedication of our volunteers!
This year, we asked our members to submit nominations for outstanding volunteers within the club. These nominees were entered into a draw to win travel certificates donated by our sponsor Air North, Yukon's Airline. We want to ensure that our nominees see how appreciated they are, which is why we've posted the nominations below! Read on to see some of the amazing things our members have said about our volunteers!
2026 Nominees:
Akisha Oliver - Akisha Oliver took the time to create a parent group chat on WhatsApp and keep the U14 Boys families updated with pictures, Videos, Screenshots of the Live Streams as well as the games, times and scores during their National Tournament in Calgary and during the 2026 season.
Alison Adams - Alison I believe was the Team Parent for 15UG provincials and nationals travel teams. Alison has done really well by planning meals with Shari. She also is a chaperone/ driver for the teams travels. Groceries are ready at the hotel right after landing to Calgary for Nationals. Alison was so efficient and I know the players are in good hands while they are travelling. She is also great at scorekeeping and score kept most of the time at Provincials when there were no other parent who went.
- Alison and Shari made a great team coordinating U15G’s travels. They were very organized, approachable, dependable and all the good things you can say about travel coordinators. They went above and beyond their roles. I don’t even have the words to describe how grateful I, and my daughter are to them. They both deserve to be the outstanding volunteers this season.
- Alison brings a level of confidence and ease to scorekeeping and being a general all around help every way she can. An excellent cheer captain and all around great person to have around.
Andrea Wilson (winner!)
- Because she works so hard to make sure the right outcome happens even when things get tough! Thx Andrea!
- Is there anything Andrea doesn’t do? Andrea works tirelessly to make sure the Sub club is run with integrity, constant and clear communication as well as encouraging other volunteers to ensure the health of an expanding club! Thank you Andrea
- don't even know where to start. This club could not run without you!! You have turned it into a well oiled machine that runs seamlessly. I wish more people understood the scope and magnitude of the work that you do. I appreciate the shit out of you and am very thankful to have your support, patience, and understanding. You are AMAZING!!
- Andrea is a phenomenal wealth of knowledge. For all the questions I have no matter time of day or hour, she responds as quickly as she can. She knows everything about Subzero, and I appreciate her expertise and willingness to always help or find the answer. Thanks, Andrea!!

- I am pleased to nominate Andres Wilson for the Subzero outstanding volunteer in acknowledgement of her exceptional dedication, professionalism, and impact on the Subzero community. Since joining the organization as a volunteer, she has consistently demonstrated an extraordinary level of commitment and work ethic. She works incredibly hard, communicates exceptionally well with everyone she interacts with, and approaches every task with enthusiasm and reliability. What stands out most is the positive effect she has had across the organization. Subzero is unquestionably stronger because of her involvement. She seems to be everywhere at once — always stepping up where needed, supporting others, and helping ensure things run smoothly. Her presence is felt throughout the organization, and her contributions do not go unnoticed. Beyond the sheer amount of work she contributes, she brings positivity, energy, and professionalism to everything she does. She represents the very best qualities of a volunteer and has become an invaluable part of the Subzero community. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition.
- For being the Subzero Superwoman! She does it all and makes coaching so much easier, we would not be able to do it without her!
Armand Guilbeault, Frank Oblak and Patrick Sageaktook - When we needed assistant coaches for the 14U boys team, these three stepped up. They haven't been able to be at all the practices and games, but I think that's what makes them great volunteers: they gave what they could. Of course, there are always people who put in a crazy amount of time helping out, but I think we should acknowledge those who are just giving what they can. In my books, that's plenty.
Dwayne Stoker - Great coach, years of volunteering, kind and encouraging in every role he’s in.
Hannah Sunico - Organizing fundraising for U15 girls
Heather Villeneuve (winner!) - Heather is a constant source of inspiration. I see her being such a supportive parent who’s out there on the floor whenever anything is needed. She loves without hesitation and brings a whole lot of love and care to the court.
All of the team raffle coordinators: Renee Beecher, Darnell Kiriak, Becky Bowen, Trish Hirsch, Nicole Yuroski, Shari Snider (winner!), Carrie Ariss, Faith McLean - Outstanding work on keeping their team raffle organized, which is not small feat. They were all committed, asked questions when they were unsure, patient with parents, and got things to me in a timely manner. I could not have done this raffle without your support. I really want to stress how important this fundraiser is for the club. THANK YOU!!
Jeffrey McLean - Jeffrey is always helpful, in a good mood, and an inspiration to the 16UB Dragons team
Jennifer Floyd - She’s the best!
Jeremy Staveley - Jeremy is the best example of what it means to be a coach for youth. He is a positive leader and role model for the players. He sets high expectations and yet is kind and generous with his time and teachings. He is also so knowledgeable about volleyball…great resource in the Yukon.
Kirsten Pattimore - She goes above and beyond for volunteering. She is such a bright face to see and extremely helpful with her knowledge she shares.
Krista Strand (winner!) - Amazing dedication as a team manger. Incredible support to all the families and coaches.
- Krista Strand is the backbone of our UB15 team and truly deserving of recognition as an Outstanding Volunteer. As team manager, her organization, commitment, and support ensure that everything runs smoothly both on and off the court.
Liza Mannen - I am nominating Liza because she is very reliable, helpful, and always willing to volunteer her time. She has a positive attitude and works well with the team. She is always there to help and you can depend on her whenever help is needed, especially when a player gets injured—she is always quick to assist.
- Team mom on the 14UB National trip in Calgary. Not only did she drive, chaperone, and be the team medic (when needed), she made sandwiches till 1am on our first day AND was scorekeeper for more the 50% of the matches. Incredible.
Marisa Whyte - To organize and distribute the jerseys and gear for all the SubZero athletes is no small feat!
Martin Guilbeault - Martin rarely gets recognition or even a thank you and he puts in a huge amount of time and effort organizing the equipment for Subzero. Stocking first aid kits, delivering equipment, labelling dozens of balls and bags each season and keeping track of it all in a giant spreadsheet. I appreciate you, Martin!
Michael Durham - Mike is the Board member that got the Subzero Ice Caps up and running this year. In between a demanding job, a family and Subzero board obligations he got this fantastic program running and is creating opportunities for the next gen of volleyball players as well as providing experience and mentoring for youth coaches.
Mike McLean - Has been volunteering for years. Always shows up for players and often spends all day the the gym during tournaments from start to finish.
- For stepping up as a coach when his kid wasn't even on the team! Being a positive role model for the girls. Basically just being Fantastic.
Sandy Miller - Could Sandy be any more awesome? I don't think so. Sandy always steps up with a smile and gets things done. She is an absolute machine staying on top of the Subzero finances and running a wildly successful raffle for the past 4 years, which is a huge amount of work. Sandy is the absolute BEST!
- Sandy is a force! So thankful that year after year Sandy takes on the club wide raffle which comes with communication and patience with Charitable Gaming and that is no walk in the park! Thank you for organizing and completing such a successful club wide fundraiser every year Sandy!
- As the Treasurer for Subzero, Sandy sets up and handles the raffle which is the clubs biggest fundraiser. Dealing with Charitable Gaming is no easy task nevermind adding balancing the books and staying budget for our growing club! Always with a warm smile and great laugh - Sandy thank you for the hundreds of hours of volunteering. We appreciate you!
Shari MacIntosh (winner!) - Shari is our Travel coordinator for the 15UG and her ability to secure hotels that are close to venues, planning of vehicles and pre booking team dinners at restaurants is so appreciated for a smooth run out of town travel!
- Shari did a really fantastic job being the travel coordinator for U15G this year. She was very organized, responsible, approachable, detail-oriented and supportive. Above and beyond? Yep, she did that, and more! Shari is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!!!!!
- Shari went above and beyond for our athletes as travel manager for two trips and it was seamless and appreciated!
- Shari volunteered as U15G Travel coordinator this year. I would say she has done above and beyond of what was expected. Our teams had well organized trips. We were all well informed. All parents are always included in communications. The players were really taken care of from planning meals for the team as well. She worked really hard to make the travel work for what the coaches and parents wanted. Shari is so helpful and willing to help each player, coach and parent.
- Shari has done a phenomenal job being the TC (travel coordinator) being conscientious of staying within budget(getting an amazing package for parking), spending significant time being aware of room pairings, vehicle groupings with team dynamics, always willing to pivot with a positive attitude and can do attitude - Team Frost 🥶 and Team Avalanche 15UG had seamless and well supported travel because of her commitment, time and energy she has put into Subzero! Thank you Shari!
- Shari is a bucket of sunshine She puts order to the world in a way that makes us all smile. I really appreciate how she was a steady resource through the whole travel season.
Taylor Phillips - Taylor is super-human. She coaches 3 teams, spent 11 days straight at Nationals and does it all with a smile. It is clear that Taylor really cares about our athletes and wants to grow the sport of volleyball in the Yukon. Thank you for being awesome, Taylor!
- For all of her hard work and commitment to coach three teams this season, particularly to fill in the gaps that were needed for the teams to operate at all and compete at nationals. This gal went to nationals for 12 days!
Val Long - Val has gave her time and energy to the U15 boys team for 2 seasons now. She gives great knowledge and compassion to the sport to help the boys improve every time they are on the court.
Wayne Potoroka - Wayne is the guy who always steps up when something needs doing. He's the President of Subzero, a ref, a coach and an all-around great guy who always lends a hand.

2025 Nominees:
Crystal McLean - Unlike last year when I took on trip planning, this year this role has been admirably given to Crystal. She’s communicated with our team promptly and written up our budgets. She has asked all the right questions while even typing up itineraries and to-bring lists, things I assumed I needed to do! Her and Mike also hosted our team party, which is a big ask if you know how energetic and loud our girls are!
Sean McCarron (winner) - Outstanding coach!
Jeremy Staveley - Well balanced administrator and coach
- Jeremy has been an amazing role model, coach, cheerleader and friend to our U14B boys team this season. The boys grew and learned so much, they represented the Yukon so well on each of their 3 trips to Alberta for tournaments, as well as here at home and that is truly a testament to Jeremy's leadership. He is positive, supportive and always meets the boys where they are - he doesn't get frustrated, and deals with challenges in a mature and timely way. I have been so impressed with his coaching style, my son has flourished this year. Thanks Jeremy!
Eva McCulley - Eva is an extraordinary young person who is always ready and willing to help, for hours on end. All weekend, all day and night. Eva has saved the tournaments a countless amounts of times with being a referee, linesperson, score keeper and anything else that was needed. When refereeing, she stays strong on her calls, even when questioned by coaches, parents or athletes. Eva's efforts go beyond the call of duty as a player and referee, she is the true meaning of a volunteer and even then, she goes above and beyond.
Liza Mannen - Liza is an amazing human being who has helped out beyond measure. Liza ran the U13 tournaments smoothly and was a saving grace at the CGC for the Yukon Championships. Always with a smile, welcome and a helping hand, Liza is willing to do whatever it takes to help out and ensure all the youth are having fun. Thank you Liza for everything!!
Sandy Miller (winner) - It’s hard to pick just one volunteer to nominate as I can see how much time the volunteers invest in Subzero. The coaches especially! I appreciate all the hard work and time they invest. I am nominating Sandy though, as I can see what a huge job the raffle coordination is and all the time she puts in for that and the finances. Thank you Sandy!
Dawn Atkinson - Dawn went above and beyond for the u16 girls raffle.
Alethea Wallace - She stepped up to volunteer to supervise and coached the U14 Boys Teal team while I wasn't able to longer coach due to family/son health issues down in Vancouver for most part of the season. Without her, the team would of folded and no longer exist. She had the energy and the will to do this even though she didn't have a lot of background. That is quite amazing!
Andrea Wilson (winner) - Without question - the club would not run without her tireless support and leadership!
- Andrea's communication, dedication 24/7, newsletter creation, social media posts! I appreciate her and all her time so much, it is a major reason this club is so well structured and reliable .... Thank you from a mom with two Sub Athletes
- Andrea is the president and makes the club run smoothly and efficiently. Without her coaches would have a harder time, athletes and parents wouldn't know what is happening and there would be less opportunity for volleyball in the Yukon.
Lisa Butler - She did many things forever for the 13UG.
- Awesome job organizing logistics for our tournament and amazing clear communications that really are so appreciated.
Val Long - Val supported our U14B boys team this season and it was amazing! Her patience and sense of humor kept the boys entertained and engaged. She helped to take such great care of our team while traveling, while still allowing them all room to grow and learn. These boys all grew and learned so much this season, they represented Yukon well both here and in Alberta. They treated each other with kindness and respect and had a lot of fun, thanks to the leadership set by Val!
Fréderique Janvier Crête - for her dedication and time she puts into coaching.
Caroline Holway - Caroline’s dedication and commitment to the Yukon volleyball community are nothing short of exceptional. Her unwavering passion for the sport and youth athletic development will continue to have a profound impact on volleyball in the territory for years to come. Caroline selflessly dedicates countless hours to training athletes, organizing high-performance opportunities, and coordinating various aspects of the sport. Her involvement spans practices, training seminars, events, workshops, travel logistics, volunteer management, and more. Caroline’s intensity and commitment to excellence set a high standard, pushing athletes to reach their full potential. While her driven approach can sometimes be challenging, as she consistently pushes the capacity of players, coaches, volunteers, and parents, it is that very passion that fuels progress and excellence in athletic performance. Caroline’s efforts are leaving a lasting mark on Yukon’s volleyball community. Her tireless work ensures that young athletes have the opportunity to develop their skills, realize their potential, compete at the national level, and experience the transformative power of sport. It is evident to anyone involved in volleyball throughout the territory that Caroline pours her heart and soul into this work.

Caroline Holway - winner!
* She is always at every practice and very understanding and goes out of her way to encourage and help.
* Caroline is one of the founding members of Subzero and has been with the club since its inception. Not only does she sit on the Board and coach two teams, but she works tirelessly to provide athletes with better training, equipment, competition, and opportunities to improve in their sport. She is a driving force in Subzero!
Connie Gleason
Connie is our Complaints Chair and has taken on the difficult role of managing issues that arise within the club. This is a very important job and one that NO ONE wants to take on. Connie does an amazing job. She is thoughtful, thorough and takes the time to work through any issues that come up. We really appreciate you, Connie!

Jeffery McLean
* Jeffery is a stand-up role model, he’s always there at practice early and the last to leave he talks to every player individually and makes sure that everything is ok and that they are healthy and eating well. He also creates a safe space for his players to be themselves and not be afraid to criticize.
* Because of his effort and time put into coaching us. He’s always there and is very supportive to all players.
Jenny Imbeau
Jenny has been instrumental with the organization of the raffle tickets for UG14! She is flexible, patient and kind to the girls and the parents. She was an invaluable teacher to me on how to work with spread sheet and with the funds collected. Thank you, Jenny! Good luck!
Jeremy Staveley
* He puts in so much time and energy into the sport of volleyball and wants the kids of all ages to succeed! I see how much he cares and the time commitment he makes. So many coaches go above and beyond all for free and in the spirit of volunteerism and it should be acknowledged!
* Jeremy genuinely cares about his athletes and about making them better players as well as better people. He goes above and beyond to provide his athletes with a great volleyball experience and ALWAYS volunteers to help out with extra events.
* His time and dedication to the team went over and beyond what I’ve seen my years coaching
* He has done a great job creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere for the U13 boys team….and the growth in their level of play since fall is outstanding!

Kirk Gilbert
As a parent volunteer, he has gone above and beyond to support all the kids in the 13UG. From picking up and dropping off other parent’s children (including the coach’s!), to organizing a fun volleyball practice, swimming, and pizza for all who can make it, and organizing the lodging arrangements for the Calgary trip in May. Not only does he make sure the children feel supported, he ensures the parents do too!
Kirsten Pattimore - winner!
* Kirsten does a ton of behind-the-scenes work. She is the Game Night Coordinator this year and can be found at every tournament and special event, helping out, cleaning up, taking pictures and making sure everything runs smoothly.
* I always see her at everything and she always has a smile on her face. Has also helped through my first ever time as a fundraising parent. Yay Kirsten
* Kirsten has been an amazing volunteer for Subzero. She has organized and arranged fundraisers and she has been very quick to respond to emails and texts when contacted. I am grateful for all that she has done for the last few years to keep the rest of us parents in the know. She is the top of my list for this nomination.
Marisa Whyte - winner!
* Marisa goes above and beyond for the players. She stepped up to run game nights after the original organizer couldn't. She has a great rapport with all of them, not just the players on her daughters team. Marisa believes that youth sports should be about fairness, and building confidence.

Marisa Whyte and Buffy LaBonte-Sias
* Marisa and Buffy are the first to always jump at the opportunity, every Saturday game night to volunteer. This dynamic duo make game night a great time for all 45 youth who show up, which is no small feat. They are always smiling, laughing, handing out treats and keeping the games moving. They ensure the teams are evenly balanced so that fun is had by everyone. Take your pick on who is Batman and who is Robin on this dream team, because at the end of the day, they are both Batman's in my eyes. They take the lead, they are there early and make sure everything is neat and tidy before they shut the doors at the end of the night. They ensure that all youth are accounted for and have a drive home before they leave. This A-Team is irreplaceable and are truly the definition of supportive, dedicated parents. Google it, their picture is there I'm certain! Thank you Buffy and Marisa for taking time out of every Saturday evening to do what you do!

Mia Ouellette - winner!
She is committed in coaching the U13 girls. Mia is a kind coach and she is connecting with the athletes and helps them develop their skills and abilities in volleyball! She is also an excellent team player and shares her passion with young athletes.
Natasha Bilodeau
* Her dedication, support and guidance to all the girls at U14 is above and beyond. She's not only a coach but also a friend, counselor, therapist, role model, and a mama bear to all of them.
* She is an amazing coach! She has lots of understanding, compassion and she respects the girls and treat them with fairness and dignity! Thank you 😊

Nicole Yurkoski
* Because she organized the travelling for Calgary which wasn’t easy. She did her best to ensure that everything will run properly for everyone.
Sandy Miller
* Sandy has been on the Board for almost two years now and always steps in to help. She has done all of the paperwork to organize a club-wide raffle, which will potentially generate over $70k that athletes can use towards travel costs. She spends hours every week diligently managing the club's finances.
* Sandy puts in tons of hours through the treasury position, but also helps out with the U15B team and is always there to add some extra support.
* For her work to fix financial reporting for the Club and her efforts in making this year's 50:50 raffle so successful.
* She’s always been kind, and always tries her best to help out
* Sandy goes above and beyond what any volunteer Treasurer would do for an organization. Not only does she put in countless hours bookkeeping and creating financial statements, for two years in a row now she has been the point person for the Subzero Travel Raffle that brings in much needed funds in order to keep the cost of out-of-territory travel for Subzero families. This behind the scenes work often goes unnoticed. Sandy give up her Saturday evenings to volunteer for Game Nights thus assisting the club with creating an active, social, and fun way for teens to spend their evening. Finally, Sandy always has a smile to share and positive outlook. She's an outstanding volunteer!
Sean McCarron - winner!
* For giving rural kids/youth to level up their game and lots of opportunities to discover their athletic and planning talents as well as establishing good friendships with youth from other teams.
* Sean for coaching our wonderful girls
Shirley Ng
Shirley has been willing to step in and scorekeep, provide Timbits, help with trip planning, and even coach during a play-day with Heat. Her energy is boundless and her attitude from the stands or the bench always positive. Shirley is at almost every practice as well, so if there's anything the team needs I know we can count on her to be there.
Sofie Maurice
Sofie is always quick on responding to parent questions and is always willing to help. She is a friendly face at practices and does an amazing job organizing fundraising efforts for the U16 boys team. Sofie, without a doubt, is the most kind and genuine volunteer I have met so far.
Taylor Phillips
* Taylor is a superstar in Subzero. Not only does she coach the 25 players in the 17UB team, but she volunteers for every clinic, organizes all of her own team trips, endlessly advocates for her players and even helps us put together the team first aid kits. Taylor is a driving force in volleyball coaching for Arctic Winter Games, Canada Cup, beach and even for school teams. Volleyball wouldn't be the same without Taylor!
* Taylor is a great coach who is giving of a tremendous amount of time and resources. She really cares about the athletes, growing the sport of volleyball in the Yukon, and helping out in every way she can while maintaining a positive attitude and maturity.
