PLAYER SAFETY & PROGRAM INFORMATION
Coaching Requirements
To ensure the safety of all players, all coaches (Assistant and Head Coaches) must complete the following before the first practice of the season:
- Criminal Record Check (CRC)
- Must be submitted and cleared prior to the first practice
- Must be updated every 3 years
- All documentation is kept confidential by the RCBA office
- Respect in Sport Certification
- Mandatory for all coaches (Assistant and Head Coaches)
- Must be completed and submitted before the first practice
- Designed to help coaches recognize and address:
- Bullying
- Abuse
- Harassment
- Discrimination in sport
TEAM SELECTION PROCESSES BY DIVISION
Zoning
Kindergarten to Grade 4
- Players are placed based on geographic zones:
- North, South, or East Regina
- Teams are drafted to group players with others from their school whenever possible
- Players practice and play games within their zone
- Adjustments may occur based on registration or coaching availability
- Focus: fun, friendship, and positive experience
Grade 5 to Grade 12
- Program is city-wide (no zoning)
- Players are evaluated starting in Grade 5
- Teams are drafted based on evaluation results
- Players may be placed in any area of Regina for practices and games
- Focus: fair and balanced team selection
Player Placement Requests
- Grades 1–2 & High School Division
- Requests are accepted
- Must be included in registration form
- RCBA will attempt to accommodate
- Grades 3–4
- Requests must be emailed to: rcba@sasktel.net
- Must include reason for request
- Not guaranteed
- Grades 5–8
- Player placement requests are not accepted
- This supports fair evaluation-based drafting
- All players must register in the correct grade level
- Incorrect registrations may be corrected or removed
Drafting Process
Kindergarten to Grade 4
- Teams are drafted based on:
- Zone placement
- School grouping (when possible)
- Requests considered when possible
- Teams may be adjusted due to registration or coach availability
Grade 5 to Grade 8
- Teams are drafted based on player evaluation results
- No placement requests are accepted
- Goal is fair and balanced team creation
Evaluations
- Conducted by independent evaluators
- Assess player skills including:
- Layups
- Shooting
- Ball handling
- Athletic ability/height
- 2-on-2 play
- 5-on-5 play
Important Note:
- Evaluations are not tryouts
- All registered players are placed on a team
Coach Pairings
Kindergarten to Grade 4
- Coaches may request to coach together
- No restrictions on pairings
- Teams are zoned, allowing flexibility
Grade 5 to Grade 8
- Head Coaches may select one Assistant Coach
- Maximum pairing: 1 Head Coach + 1 Assistant Coach
- Pairings are tentatively approved until evaluations are complete
- Pairings may be adjusted if:
- Their children evaluate at similar draft levels
- The pairing would create an unbalanced (“stacked”) team
Nights of Availability
Players may select unavailable practice nights during registration; however, the following rules apply:
- Jr. Cougar & Jr. NBA programs
- Must be available on Saturdays
- Grades 3–6
- Must be available on Saturdays (games only)
- No Saturday practices for these divisions
- Grades 3–12
- Must be available a minimum of two practice nights
- Boys Grades 9–12
- Must be available for Sunday games
- Girls Grades 9–10
- Must be available for Sunday games
- If only one practice night is selected:
- RCBA cannot guarantee placement on a team that practices that night
