NSFC weather policy

Weather Policy & Cancellations

At NSFC, the safety of our players, families, coaches, and referees is always our top priority.  Soccer is played outdoors, and weather conditions can change quickly, so we ask all families to review and understand our Weather Policy.

Practices

All practices are subject to weather conditions and may be cancelled at the coach's discretion.  Coaches will consider factors such as temperature, field conditions, lightning risk, and overall player safety when making decisions. Families should always check for coach communications prior to heading to the field.

Games

Game-day decisions related to weather will be made by NSFC in coordination with field management, referees, and local safety systems.  In some cases, games may be delayed, shortened, or cancelled due to unsafe conditions.

Lightning & Severe Weather – Thor Guard System

NSFC fields are protected by the Thor Guard Lightning Detection System, which is installed at the following locations within Lake in the Hills:

  • Sunset Park Sports Complex
  • Leroy Guy Park
  • Ryder Park
  • Plote Field
  • Indian Trail Beach

When conditions are favorable for lightning:

  • A 15-second blast will sound and an amber warning light will illuminate.
  • When the amber light is on, all players, coaches, officials, and spectators must immediately leave the field or park and see shelter.
  • Activities may resume only after the all-clear signal, indicated by three blasts, each no longer than 5 seconds.
  • The Thor Guard system typically waits for a 30-minute period after the last lightning incident is detected before issuing an all-clear signal to resume outdoor activities.

There are no exceptions to this policy.

Extreme Conditions

Practices and games may also be cancelled or modified due to:

  • Extreme heat or cold
  • Poor field conditions (standing water, mud, ice)
  • Heavy rain, high winds, or other unsafe weather

Communication

Weather-related updates will be communicated through official NSFC channels and/or directly from coaches.  If you are unsure about the status of a practice or game, please reach out to the head coach of your team.  We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping keep NSFC a safe and positive environment for all participants.
