Each CJFL season teams across the country give back to the community that supports them. Players and coaches volunteer at several events and/on non-profit organizations, chipping in where they can to make a difference.
The week of the Canadian Bowl the CJFL honours one such individual who takes their volunteerism to the next level and name them the CJFL Past Commissioner Award winner for outstanding community service.
The Ontario Conference nominee for this award is Greg Johnson of the London Beefeaters who was named the Conference’s Bill Prest Community Service Award winner.
Greg is a fourth-year player for the Beefeaters. He’s not a starter, in fact, Greg has probably watched more Beefeaters snaps then played in his four years with the team
Despite this, he is the most positive player on the Beefeaters roster. He never misses practice and more importantly never misses a volunteer opportunity. He’s a true example of a CJFL player.
Greg is currently attending school full time learning the butchery trade. He fell in love with this profession while working part time at a Metro Grocery Store and his intention is to learn this trade, work and eventually open his own butcher shop.
He has also been volunteering as an assistant coach at his alma matter, Banting Secondary School for the three years, working with the offensive and defensive lines. His commitment is two-and-a-half to three hours per day, Monday to Friday from late August through to the end of the season in early November.
He has been an instrumental part of the Beefeaters fundraiser High School Showcase Night as an operations volunteer for the last three seasons, where he helped set up and take down the facilities and served on the stick crew for the high school games.
Greg is a guy who loves the CJFL, loves the Beefeaters, gives back to his community, is learning a skilled trade and has been working all while playing. He is a true example of a blue-collar work ethic, with respect of his peers and coaches despite not being a player who dominates on the field.
Everyone at the CJFL thanks Greg for the amazing work he does and are proud to nominate him for the Past Commissioner Award.
The winner of this prestigious award is announced the week of the Canadian Bowl, and the recipient is invited to the Banquet of Champions to be recognized.
