About our coaches:

Coach Mia Ouellette – Assistant Coach 14UG

As an educator for the past 18 years, Coach Mia brings a passion for helping young people fulfill their goals to her role as a coach with Subzero. A former player at the provincial level, Mia first began coaching grade 9/10 volleyball in 2012. This year, she is taking on the challenge of working with the 13U Girls group, as she loves teaching the fundamentals of volleyball. When asked why she coaches, she responded “I coach because it is important for youth to develop skills and passions outside of school for their development and well-being. I am a strong believer that playing sports can help youth develop social, collaborative, self-regulation, and self-agency skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives.” As a coach, she always enjoys watching a youth’s progression both on the court and as a person from the beginning to the end of a season. But a highlight from the 2023 season was accompanying the15U boys to Nationals in Edmonton and seeing them work so hard together to win the semi-finals. Subzero is absolutely thrilled to have Mia on our coaching team again this year!

Meet Coach Jeremy Staveley – Head Coach 14UB-Black

Subzero is thrilled to have Jeremy Staveley with us for a second year. Coach Jeremy joined Subzero during the 2023 season as the Head Coach for the newly established Subzero Faro Satellite team. He was instrumental in helping to build a thriving volleyball program in Faro, which continues in the 2024 season. Born in Vancouver and raised in Cochrane, Alberta, Jeremy has lived in the Yukon on and off since 2006, but has called Yukon home since 2020. These days, he can be found enjoying all the benefits of being a Marsh Lake resident. As an avid paddler, in the summer you will generally find him on the water. Jeremy began his volleyball journey as a player with Dinos Volleyball (Calgary) and later with the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC). He has been coaching for the past 16 years, and has coached for the Prince George Kodiaks, Calgary High School Athletics, Team Alberta, and in the Yukon. When asked why he coaches, Jeremy cited a love for the sport, competing, and making meaningful connections between life and athletics. We are so fortunate to have Coach Jeremy with us this year!

Coach Sean McCarron – Head Coach 16UG-S/C

Sean began his athletic career playing soccer, volleyball, golf and basketball in school. He even played some epic games of street hockey. These years spent with mentor coaches helped develop Sean into the high energy and passionate coach and teacher he is today! With 31 years of coaching under his belt he knows his way around a basketball or volleyball court. In that time the highlight of his coaching career has been winning back to back volleyball titles coaching his daughter at FH Collins. Sean runs an energetic, dynamic practise for his 16UG girls hoping to shape their volleyball into a fun, aggressive and entertaining style. His practices are organized and efficient, making the best use of time. His enthusiasm for the sport is apparent and he is passing this excitement on to the girls. The enjoyment of working hard and digging up those balls, swinging at every set, and celebrating every play is reflected in smiles on the court. When not coaching Sean is hanging out with family, playing basketball, watching NFL football, golfing, biking, and marking essays. You can also find him in a classroom teaching English to grade 11 and 12 students as well as, Drama to grade 8 and 9 students. Remember him on coach appreciation week (Sept. 16 - 24) with a coffee one cream, one sugar and some cheezies.

Coach Taylor Phillips – Head Coach 14UG and AC 18UG

Meet Coach Taylor Phillips, coach of Subzero’s 14U Girls AND our 18U Girls teams! Taylor has been coaching for the past 16 years and has completed her Advanced Development Coach training. If that wasn't enough, Taylor also plays a key role on the Boards of Volleyball Yukon AND Subzero. As a former northern player herself (she has competed indoor volleyball  in two Arctic Winter Games for Team NWT as well as in the Western Canada Summer Games for beach volleyball) Taylor brings an incredible amount of dedication to her coach role. She is the coach who is always booking extra fitness sessions, setting up games, talking about nutrition  and generally looking for every possible way to set up her team for success. Taylor generously gives her time to volleyball year round, coaching clinics, club season and beach season. When asked why she coaches, Taylor responded “I didn't have a volleyball coach growing up and want to give back to the sport I love. Watching the athlete grow and learn to love the sport is so rewarding. My favorite thing about coaching is watching the moment a skill makes sense to an athlete. The rapid rate of progression once that happens is incredible.” We are very fortunate to have Coach Taylor on the Subzero team!

Coach Hayli Deans – Head Coach 18UG

Subzero Volleyball Club is delighted to introduce our 18UG Head Coach Hayli Deans! Hayli grew up in Edmonton and moved to Whitehorse in 2022. She’s been playing volleyball since age 13 continuing to the team at Southern Albert Institue of Technology (SAIT) and into adult leagues. Coach Deans likes the challenge of the technical and strategic aspects of volleyball and the environment of teamwork. Having fun supporting each other and working on being a cohesive team are experiences that she hopes to bring to our Subzero 18U girls. Hayli’s goals as head coach are to encourage our athletes to develop their self-confidence, mental toughness and leadership skills through teamwork and progressive training. Coach Deans is looking forward to a fun season and all the training and games opportunities our players enjoy as part of Subzero!

Coach Tonja Hinchey – Assistant Coach 18UG

Subzero Volleyball Club is delighted to introduce returning Assistant Coach Tonja Hinchey! Tonja grew up in Saskatoon and has been in Whitehorse for close to 30 years. She played volleyball through high school and went on to set for Medicine Hat College and play in various adult leagues. Coach Hinchey remembers well the steep learning curve when a player starts up with volleyball and enjoys helping players individually develop their unique skills so they can enjoy when all the training comes together and “starts to click”. Tonja’s two daughters enjoy being part of many sports including Subzero and coaching is a way she can give back to the community some of the time and energy that others have given her family over the years. Team camaraderie and all the fun game events are the great memories Tonja is happy our players will carry with them after our season is over.

Colin has been in the Yukon for 15 years. When he is not on the court, he loves to spend time with family and in the outdoors. When asked about her coaching philosophy she believes that players need intensity and effort, the skill will follow. Emi has been in the Yukon for 13 years. Off the court she loves to power lift and read. When asked about what superpower she would like to have, Emi said a photographic memory because it would be so useful in so many different situations. Coach Emi thanks for helping the athletes build memories!

Coach Andrie Regis- Head Coach 16UB - Team 2

Coach Andrie is proud to say that volleyball is a family tradition. He grew up watching his father playing and organizing the Filipino league. His favorite thing about coaching is passing on the passion for the game to the younger generation. When asked about the one thing he wants to teach the players, he quickly said mental toughness and the ability to not get stuck. Keep looking to the next play. Andrie has been in the Yukon 13 years. Off the court he loves to do photography. When asked what superpower he would like to have, he said ‘mind reading’ so he could know what people think! We think you are great Coach Andrie!

Coach Kevaughn Anderson - Assistant Coach 16UB - Team 2

To the players, Kevaughn is known as Coach Kev, The Goat or My king. He played high school volleyball and Subzero club volleyball. His favorite thing about it is watching the athletes’ progress - from seeing the potential to the players doing it! When asked what’s the one thing that he wanted the athletes to learn from him, his answer was good decision making on and off the court. His coaching philosophy is determination and effort are key to success. He quickly added – and always smiling at the end of the game regardless of the outcome. Kevaughn has been in the Yukon almost 6 years. When not on the court, he loves to cook and play video games. Kevaughn’s superpower would be to be omnipresent so he could help as many people as possible at the same time! Thanks for helping all the U16B athletes – Coach Kev!
