CanSkate Equipment Guide

Starting CanSkate? Having the right equipment makes a big difference in your skater’s comfort, safety, and progress.

What Your Skater Needs

All skaters joining our CanSkate programs should have:

  • CSA-approved hockey helmet — mandatory for all CanSkate participants. See our helmet guidelines below.
  • Properly fitted figure or hockey skates — skates should fit correctly and have laces. Plastic and adjustable skates are not recommended. See our skate guidelines below.
  • Warm, comfortable clothing — layers are best. Avoid bulky snow suits, which can restrict movement.
  • Warm gloves or mittens — these are required to help protect hands during falls.

Helmet Guidelines

A CSA-approved hockey helmet is mandatory for all CanSkate skaters.

For the best fit and protection:

  • The helmet should fit snugly and securely.
  • Hair should not be worn in a ponytail directly under the helmet, as this can interfere with the fit. A low ponytail or braid works well.
  • A full-face cage or mask is highly recommended for new skaters, particularly those who are still learning how to fall safely and control their movements.
  • Both the helmet and chin strap should be properly adjusted.
  • Avoid placing stickers on the helmet, as they can affect the helmet material.

Bike, ski, and other non-hockey helmets are not acceptable. Skaters will not be permitted to participate until they have the required protective equipment.

Choosing the Right Skates

Properly fitted skates are one of the most important pieces of equipment for a developing skater. The right skates allow children to develop balance, control, and skating technique more easily.

CanSkate skaters can wear either figure skates or hockey skates. We recommend:

  • Skates with traditional laces rather than clips, buckles, or dials.
  • A proper, snug fit with good ankle support.
  • Skates that are appropriate for the skater’s current foot size.

Avoid Adjustable Skates

We do not recommend adjustable or expandable skates. Although they may seem like a convenient way to save money as children grow, they can interfere with skating development.

As adjustable skates are expanded, the blade does not increase in length with the boot. This can make it more difficult for young skaters to maintain proper balance and develop good skating technique.

Not sure what skates to buy? We are happy to help! Please visit the club office during regular hours or speak with a coach before purchasing skates.

What Should My Skater Wear?

Layers are the best choice for skating. Clothing should be warm but allow your child to move freely.

A good combination is:

  • Thermal or long-sleeved base layer
  • Long-sleeved shirt or sweater
  • Jogging pants or athletic pants
  • Lightweight waterproof pants if needed
  • Warm gloves or mittens

Avoid bulky snow suits, as they can make it difficult for skaters to bend, move, and learn skating skills comfortably.
