Volleyball League Information

Season of Play

  • The official ASAA policy states that the Volleyball season of play begins on June 1st and ends the last Saturday of November. This does not include July and August.

Play Dates and Times

  • Typical play dates for all Senior games are Monday and Wednesday.
  • Typical play dates for all Junior games are Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Single games will be 5:30 starts, with double headers being 5:00 & 6:30 starts
  • Doubleheaders
    • Typically, girls games will be at 5:00 PM Mondays and Tuesdays, with boys at 6:30 PM in the case of a doubleheader.
    • Typically, boys games will be at 5:00 PM Wednesdays and Thursdays, with girls at 6:30 PM in the case of a doubleheader.
  • Games may be scheduled any day of the week at either start time, subject to conflict calendars submitted in June.
  • When the first match of a double header is completed, the two incoming teams will be given 20 minutes on the clock before the start of the next match, the host school is responsible for changing the net height before the 13 minute mark occurs and the official warm up begins.


Eligibility

  • Junior: maximum of two years of Junior eligibility (Grades 10 and 11 only)
    • A Junior player is allowed to play in one game at the Senior level.  Once the Junior plays or dresses in two games at the Senior level, they must remain at the Senior level.  Games won by teams using "ineligible players" will result in the loss of those games.
  • Senior: open to all grade levels.
    • Students must be under 19 as of September 1st of the current school year.
    • There is a maximum of 3 years of eligiblity, beginning in Grade 10, regardless of participation.
    • Minimum of 800 instructional minutes and all other ASAA eligibility rules apply.
  • Two-Team Policy: ASAA policy states that high school students are not permitted to play on a non-school team in the same sport during the same season.
  • Joint School Teams: ASAA policy governs the possibility of having a joint school team. If you are running a Joint team, you must notify the Metro Office.


Rules of Play

  • Winning teams must report the score online by noon the following day by using the TeamLinkt App, or at www.metroathletics.ca login is at the bottom right corner.
  • Rally point scoring - 25 points, played to a two point difference with no cap for games 1,2,3,4.
  • Game 5 - 15 points, played to a two point difference with no cap.
  • The top of the net is to be set at the height of 2.43 for males and 2.24 for females
  • The Rules of Play are as per Volleyball Canada rules, with the following modifications:
  • Substitutes – modified 12 substitute rule will be used.
    • a team shall be allowed a maximum of 12 substitutions in any one game;
    • a player may leave the game and re-enter the game, but only for the same player.
    • players are  “tied” together; e.g. 7 for 12 – these two players are attached for that game and a player must  re-enter for the same player;
    • unlimited substitutions are allowed up to 12 per game
             i.e.   i)   7 for 12; 12 for 7 (2 subs) X 6 = 12 subs
                     ii)  7 for 12; 12 for 7 (2 bus) x 2 = 4 subs
                          8 for 6; 6 for 8 (2 subs) x 2   = 8 
  • A team must start every match with 6 eligible players. In the event of an injury where a team has no eligible players available, the team may continue play with five players. The position in rotation that becomes vacant remains in the same rotational position and continues in the rotational order. Therefore, if the vacant position is in the front row, there are only two front row players, similarly in the back row. A point and the ball is awarded to the opposition when the vacant spot rotates into position one
  • Allow teams to list up to 15 on the score sheet.
  • Game Ball:  The official ball shall be the Molten V5M5000 ** NEW** starting 2023
  • ASAA is not adopting the FIVB uniform rule or the Volleyball Canada rule indicating Uniforms must be worn during warm ups.
  • Scoresheets - must be duly completed and should be kept on record at the school, but are not submitted. Game officials may submit sanction reports if necessary.
  • During warm ups, the team not participating in the 5 minutes of hitting should be located at the end line shagging balls for their opponent, or they may be at their bench. 
  • During warm up, after hitting, players should not go under the net. They will retrieve their ball by going around the posts, or each team may have designated shaggers for their hitting warm up. 
  • Noisemakers of any kind are not permitted

Host School Responsibilities

  • Host school will have gym ready for warm up at 4:35 p.m. (Or 25 minutes before the scheduled game time)
    • This includes having the net set to the correct height.
    • This also includes changing of the net between matches in a doubleheader
  • Host school MUST PROVIDE 2 scorers.  Each school must provide 1 lines person.
  • Score sheets and dressing room facilities provided by host school.
  • If no official arrives to do the match, schools have the option of rescheduling the match or proceeding with an official agreed upon by both coaches.


Other Rules, Procedures, Expectations

  • NO CHANGE ZONE is in effect for all gymnasiums. Any male and female players must change inside dressing rooms only.
  • STAFF SUPERVISION: Staff sponsors must be provided for all "out-of-school" coaches and sponsors must be in attendance at games.  Staff sponsors must be employees of the respective School/District. The staff sponsor must identify themselves to the opposing team prior to the game and remain on site (in the gym or on the field) for the duration of the game.  In the event there is no staff sponsor on site, the game will be considered a default.  In the event of extenuating circumstances, the default is subject to Appeal to the Executive Committee. 
  • GAME CHANGES must be made through the Metro Office, at least 48 hours before game time. Please arrange an alternate date with the opposing team and then contact the Metro Office with the proposed change.
  • PROTESTS: (as per CVA Rules)  A captain may legally protest only an error in applying a rule or rule interpretation (you may not protest a "judgment call").  The official must be notified immediately of the protest and the protest must be written on the game sheet at the time of the protest.  The match will continue and the protest will be referred to the Athletics Office the following morning.
  • RESPECTING OF OPPONENTS GYM SPACE: Please note when you arrive to a facility the host school may be running a practice for another team, please be respectful of their practice and only enter the gym if invited in early, or if the 25 min prior to game start has occurred.


Tie-Breaking Procedures

If two or more teams are tied at the end of league play, the following criteria will be applied:
  • The team having the best ratio of won/lost matches, considering matches between the tied teams;
  • The team having the best ratio of won/lost sets, considering matches played between the tied teams;
  • The team having the best ratio of won/lost sets, considering all matches of the round;
  • The team having the best ratio of points for/against, considering sets played between the tied teams;
  • The team having the best ratio of points for/against, considering all sets played;


Provincial Representation

The following rules will be applied in determining Edmonton's Provincial Championship representation:

  • 1A, 2A, 3A, or 4A teams competing in Division 1 who advance to the City Championship game in Division 1 will receive a berth to Provincials.
  • Provincial Qualifier play will follow the City Championships to determine any remaining berths.
  • The Metro Office will communicate regarding format for provincial qualifiers, guided by the following basic principles:
    • 3A Qualifiers provide for a 6-team, 2 pool round robin followed by elimination draw, teams will be ranked based on final regular season standings.
    • 2A Qualifiers provide for a single-elimination draw depending on numbers of teams, teams will be ranked based on final regular season standings.
    • 1A Qualifiers provide for a single-elimination draw depending on numbers of teams, teams will be ranked based on final regular season standings.
