Hockey Calgary has made a change to the seeding grid in U18 NBC to include Tiers 1-4, replacing their previous grid of Tiers 1-3. This allows associations greater flexibility to group players and teams according to skill level. What this means for us at McKnight is that we will no longer have parity teams in U18 NBC. There will be 4 teams, Tiers 1-4.

One of the reasons for this change is the continued increase in the number of players choosing to participate in non-contact hockey. With more players opting for the non-contact pathway, there is a wider range of team compositions within that stream. The new Tier 1–4 structure gives our association the ability to create teams with players of more comparable skill levels.

Our goal with this approach is to:

  • Place players with other players of similar skill and ability;

  • Create teams that are as competitive and balanced as possible;

  • Provide an appropriate level of competition and development for each team; and

  • Better accommodate the growing number of players choosing non-contact hockey.

What does this mean for your player?

It is important to understand that a player's tier this year should not be viewed as a direct comparison to their U18 tier from last year. The grid itself has changed.

It may appear as though there is downward movement, but this does not necessarily mean that the player has moved down in skill or that their development has gone backwards. Rather, the numbering system and team structure have changed to allow us to create more appropriately matched teams under the new Hockey Calgary model.

We recognize that changes to tiering can understandably create questions for players and parents, particularly when comparing this year's placement with last year's. We want to emphasize that this is a positive for NBC! Our focus throughout the process is on creating teams that are balanced, competitive, and provide a positive hockey experience for all players.
