2026/2027 COACHING

The Springfield Minor Hockey Association is looking for dedicated coaches, managers, and support staff to join our team for the 2026-2027 season. Whether you’re an experienced coach or just starting, there’s a role for you!

Note: The required training may be completed prior to coach selection at your discretion; however, it is only mandatory for individuals who are selected as coaches. 


The SMHA Executive will make its decision based on the applicant’s coaching experience, philosophy, and training. Applicants who are selected will be notified once teams have been formed.


Coaching Requirements and Expectations

  1. Hockey Canada Registry - All Coaches must first register in HCR/Spordle.  Click the following link to log in and register for the Bench Staff item: SMHA HCR.


  1. SMHA Coach Application – All Coaches must complete a SMHA Coach Application Form to formally document their intent to coach and be considered in the selection process. Applicants will be emailed the application form at a later date. You may also click the link here to complete the application:  SMHA Coaching Application.


  1. Training/Certifications - All required Hockey Canada training and certifications applicable to the level you are coaching must be completed by December 1, 2026, no exceptions.  


 Eastman Minor Hockey Association requires all coaching staff including Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches to complete the following additional training located in the Eastman Constitution: U7 - Skating 1, U9 - Goaltending 1, U11 - Small Area Games, U13- Checking.  They can be located with the same links to Hockey Manitoba above.


  • Respect in Sport - Activity Leaders is required for all coaches and bench staff and must be renewed every 5 years.  This also must be completed by December 1, 2026.


  1. Criminal Record Check (CRC): A Criminal Record Check is required once you have been selected as a coach (see below for the application process). Child Abuse Registry Check (CAR) may be required. Further information will be communicated on this as soon as it is available. 


  1. Code of Conduct - Coaches must abide by the SMHA Code of Conduct, Hockey Manitoba and Hockey Canada guidelines and player pathways which promote fair play and respect for all participants and officials. Coaches will follow the Fair Play Code of Hockey Canada.  This can be found in the Hockey Manitoba Constitution on page 125.


  1. Equipment - All on-ice coaches must always wear a helmet.

Coaching-Child Abuse and Criminal Record Check Application Information



1.     Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check

Please fill out all the highlighted sections on this application and attend the Oakbank RCMP detachment to submit your application. The Volunteer Letter must be submitted with your application to waive the fee.

 

Please bring the below items when submitting your application:  

  • 2 pieces of government issued ID – 1 photo. 

Oakbank detachment is open Monday – Friday between 8-4 and closed between 1-2 for lunch.  It will take at least a week to process. 

 

Once your results are returned you need to show the head coach/manager of your team, and it must be signed off.

 

NOTE: If you live in Winnipeg you’ll need to go to the Winnipeg Police Service and if you live in a different RM you’ll need to go to your local RCMP detachment.  Please contact SMHA Secretary if you need further information regarding these application processes.  mailto:secretary.icehawkshockey@gmail.com

 
2.     Child Abuse Registry Application

 

 

COMMON ERROR:
Section A-4 Applicant Authorization: (seen in picture below)-This signature should be another bench staff member from your team, who verified your identification.

3. Declaration Form (Head Coach/Manager ONLY)


As bench staff begin to receive their clear checks, they are asked to show and submit a copy to the Coach or Manager.  Please use the Declaration form attached to keep track of all bench staff who have completed their checks.

If a bench staff member has not completed these forms by TBD or a positive result is returned,
it is your responsibility as coach/manager to notify SMHA Executive
