To get cleared for the field, all perspective refs must complete these onboarding steps:

paid referee
(age 14+)

COMPENSATION: $14-$22/Hour

For your first few games, you will be paired up on the field with an experienced referee to learn the mechanics in real-time (unpaid training period).
As soon as our field leads see you can command the game solo—which usually happens by the end of week one—you move directly into a paid spot!

volunteer Junior ref
(under age 14)

COMPENsATION: Volunteer / Community Service Hours.

The perfect, safe way for middle schoolers to start learning the tricks of the trade. You don't get paid yet, but you will work alongside an experienced mentor ref, gaining massive confidence, quick decision-making skills, and practical work experience before you turn 14.

key responsibilities:  What does a ref do? 

Our crew members are far more than just whistle-blowers—they are game managers and mentors. On the field, you will handle:


dispute Resolution

Handle sideline or on-field conflicts calmly and explain decisions clearly to coaches and players.

rule enforcement

Apply the official rules of flag football consistently, fairly, and decisively.

score keeping

Keep track of the score for each game and submit to league director.

safety & Equipment

Ensure every child is wearing proper safety gear and maintain a clean, secure playing environment.

game management

Keep the game moving at an excellent, crisp pace while accurately tracking the time and keeping score.

professionalism

Remain completely impartial, communicate respectfully with players, and project confidence.

play management

Make sharp, definitive calls on fast-moving plays (like pass interference or whether a flag was cleanly pulled).
