Welcome to the Peterborough Thunder Competitive Club Program!

The Competitive Club program (often also referred to as the “travel” or “rep” program) provides opportunities for youth of all ages to further their skill development and benefit from the experience of playing on a competitively-focused team. We are the largest youth volleyball club between the GTA and Ottawa, comprising 20 teams supporting over 200 athletes (both girls and boys) for the 2025/6 season in age ranges spanning the entirety of the OVAs competitive categories (from U12 to U18). This is important to be aware of primarily because it allows so many athletes from Peterborough to participate.

In Ontario, the competitive club season begins in September each year and culminates in April with the Ontario Provincial Championships. A small number of teams may choose to participate in the National Championships depending on provincial rankings and fundraising initiatives. All competitive club teams practice twice weekly, typically with 2 hour blocks assigned per practice, with some variation based on age. We do our best to secure gym space primarily within the city of Peterborough but occasionally are required to leverage gyms across Peterborough County to support the significantly increased volume of teams requiring space in the last 3 years.

Most competitions are organized in one-day tournament-style format, competing against teams from across in the province. There are four OVA tournaments in a season, plus the multi-day Provincial Championships. Coaches are encouraged to organize participation in additional tournaments and schedule scrimmages for the growth and development of their athletes.

Parents and athletes can expect our coaching staff to fully engage in technical skill development and character development. Peterborough Thunder subscribes to Volleyball Canada’s Long Term Development model, which encourages a focus on the player, the athlete and the person. Peterborough Thunder coaches are held to a high standard of professional performance and act as role models and passionate advocates who will hold high standards for their athletes. The opportunities for growth and development through club sports are limitless, and the benefits extend far beyond the reach of a volleyball court. The athletes in our program are immersed in a safe and nurturing environment that promotes the acquisition of life skills, which will contribute to their success and fulfillment both on and off the court.
