what is elite hockey?

Elite Hockey in Calgary is made up of 4 co-ed (Quadrant) associations and one female-only hockey association for high-level players, U13 - U21.  Elite Hockey is also called AA or AAA Hockey.

As of the 2025/26 season, U11AA and U13AA are hosted by Calgary's community clubs (eg McKnight). Please register for these teams by completing McKnight's registration process.

At the Elite level, teams available to try out for are as follows:

U13AAA-U18AAA are hosted by Calgary's quadrant teams. (For McKnight players, that is Northstars)

U13AA-U18AAA Female Elite teams are hosted by the Calgary Fire.

The cost to play Elite hockey is substantially more than community hockey, most teams have travel requirements, more practices and games, and off-ice training. Players must try out for these teams.

McKnight falls within:

Players trying out for Elite Hockey must register directly with the Calgary Northstars Hockey Association or the Calgary Fire Hockey Association.  There is a cost to try out. These players must also register with McKnight Hockey to facilitate our evaluation process and to "hold" a spot for your player should they return to McKnight.

If you wait to register with McKnight until after you are released from the quadrant tryouts, you will pay the late fee (fee applies to registrations after August 15).

When you register, please indicate that you are trying out for Quadrant Hockey when prompted. If your player does not make the Quadrant team, please contact the McKnight Registrar.

Players who are trying out for Quadrant Hockey will not be required to pay unless they return to McKnight.

It is the player/parent's responsibility to inform McKnight Hockey that they have made the Northstars or Fire team.  Please email our Registrar the details at registrar@mcknighthockey.com.
