The Berne Union Rockets came out strong Friday night but couldn’t overcome a late surge from rival Fisher Catholic, falling 21–14 in a heartbreaking finish.
The Rockets opened the game with an impressive drive, moving the ball down the field with ease before a fumble on the 4-yard line ended the early scoring threat. The Berne Union defense responded with energy, holding the Irish offense to minimal gains and setting the tone for the first quarter.
On their next possession, quarterback Carson Kiger connected with James Hocking for a 22-yard touchdown strike to give the Rockets the early lead. Moments later, the defense added to the momentum when Dillan Cornell intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown, putting Berne Union ahead 14–0 after the opening quarter.
Fisher Catholic answered in the second quarter with a 9-yard touchdown pass, trimming the Rockets’ lead to 14–7 heading into halftime.
The second half turned into a defensive battle, with Berne Union holding strong until the closing minutes. With just three minutes remaining, Fisher Catholic tied the game on a pick-six. Following a great kickoff return by Ashton O’Rouke, Berne Union looked poised for a game-winning drive, but another costly fumble gave the Irish the ball back. Fisher Catholic would seize the opportunity, breaking free for a 55-yard touchdown run to take the lead and ultimately secure the win.
Despite a strong defensive performance and early dominance, the Rockets’ six turnovers proved too costly to overcome.
Berne Union will look to regroup and bounce back next week as they close out the regular season and prepare for postseason play.
