about Island hoops

  • Island Hoops is more than just a recreational sports group. Unlike many other rec sport organizers, our leadership cares deeply about intentional community-building and has a low tolerance for people who are consistently bringing 'bad vibes'.
  • We focus on having fun over winning, but we do have formal and informal opportunities for skill development.  We like to see people playing hard and smiling at the same time!
  • Most players are between age 23-40, although we regularly have players between age 17 and 50+ attend.

how can PLAYING WITH ISLAND HOOPS benefit high school players?

  • Ongoing opportunities to play alongside, and learn from, experienced high-level players (many of our regular participants have provincial-tournament-level high school experience, and some are former PACWEST or USport athletes)
  • Improve their ability to make quick decisions in game situations (e.g. learn when deviation from a set play is a smart decision)
  • Learn what it's like to play without the direction of a coach (When do you call for a substitute? How do you make decisions on the floor? Experienced players will support new players in learning the culture and expectations)
  • Get a sense for what it's like to play at the 'next level' physically (have an opportunity to play against bigger and stronger players than may be possible at a high school level)
  • Be introduced to 'sport for life' (get a taste of what participation in community sports can be like after completion of a varsity career)

WANT TO HOOP WITH US?

Island Hoops invites current high-school students who meet all of the following criteria* to come play with us:
  • Turning 18 this year (generally, this means you are in the second half of your Grade 12 year);
  • Have played on your school's varsity basketball team in either or both of your grade 11 and 12 year; and
  • Fall within our Gender Inclusion Policy (are a girl or woman, or a trans person of any gender identity).

We especially welcome players with their eyes on CCAA or USport athletics after graduation, as previous high school players have had positive experiences playing with us in preparation for the post-secondary competition level.

We know that the social aspect of sport is important, and encourage new players to come with friends or teammates if they would like. We are happy to put you on the same team for the evening.

*If did not play on your high school's varsity team but meet the other 2 criteria, you are still welcome to come out. However, we find that the youngest players in our demographic are more likely to have a positive experience if they have recent organized basketball experience.

whICH ISLAND HOOPS programs can high school students participate in?

Tuesday drop-in is a casual, non-competitive opportunity for women and genderqueer people to play basketball every week.

  • Players are assigned to teams for the night by the organizer (requests to play with friends are happily accepted; there is no 'picking teams' so no one is picked last). The goal is to create evenly matched teams to allow for enjoyable and exciting games.
  • The points don't matter after the evening is over, so this can be a time to 'be silly' and do experiments (take that tempting outside shot your coach would bench you for in a league game! Try that new 1-on-1 move you saw on TikTok!), so long as they are not dangerous/reckless and are within the rules of the game.
