Volunteer bond

To ensure the smooth operation of our league, it is essential that parents step up to volunteer in key roles such as coaches, evaluation support and team managers. Without sufficient volunteers, we will not be able to continue running the league effectively.

  • All U9 and U11 families must provide one post-dated volunteer bond for $150 per player during the registration process, to be processed if your commitments are not met at the end of the season
  • Detailed role descriptions and volunteer bond commitments are available by clicking [HERE].

League locations/ home arenas

We have worked closely with Hockey Calgary to secure ice at George Blundun/Optimist arenas (Optimist Park) for WCHL practices and games. This location is central to WCHL member boundaries and helps reduce travel time for families during the season.

Ice Shortfalls:

  • In cases where ice is unavailable at Optimist Park, additional ice will be pooled from Southwest quadrant arenas (Trails West, Glenlake, and Springbank).
  • These secondary locations will be rotated equally across teams in the age groups affected.

respect in sport- parent certification

  • Hockey Alberta requires all families in Hockey Calgary to complete the Respect in Sport (RIS) Parent Program.
  • Recertification is required every 4 years, with certificates expiring in May before the season starts.
  • Players will not be permitted to participate in pre-season skates or evaluations unless a valid RIS-Parent certification is on file.

For more information, visit the Respect in Sport - Parent (Alberta)

coach qualifications

  • House League coaches must meet the same qualifications as the community stream under the Hockey Alberta coach guidelines.
  • Coaches may request reimbursement for clinic fees after being officially selected for a coaching staff position.
  • Reimbursement requests should only be submitted after the qualification deadline (November 15th). Please wait for the ALL CALL email
  • All interested coaches must complete the WCHL Coach Application: [LINK TO APPLICATION].

Please refer to the Coaches page for more information

WCHL festival

The WCHL Festival will occur over the Family Day long weekend, with no games scheduled on Monday.

Scheduling & Locations:

  • Games will begin on each age division’s usual weekday but may include additional weekday Festival games.
  • The majority of games will be held at Optimist/George Blundun.
  • Additional games may take place at Joe Kryzka, Shouldice, Rose Kohn, Frank McCool, and 7 Chiefs arenas.

Why the Family Day Long Weekend?

We understand that hosting the WCHL Festival during this weekend may not be ideal for all families. However:

  • The WCHL is the only House League in Hockey Calgary that offers a year-end Festival.
  • Ice availability is extremely limited during the season, and scheduling the Festival on another weekend would negatively impact ice time for both House League and Community teams.

To help balance this, we have not scheduled any games on Family Day Monday.
