Valerie Johnson formed the Competitive Team in September of 1975. Originally, Shasta Trained out of Centennial Community Center, eventually finding a home in Queen’s Park at the Arenex. When the Arenex collapsed in 2016, due to heavy snowfall, the Vancouver Circus School was kind enough to give us a home until the Sportsplex was built in 2020. Since the club was founded, we’ve been responsible for 50 years of acrobatics in the City of New Westminster.
Shasta athletes have won over 18 Medals at World Championships since 1972, and over 40 National titles. In the 70’s Valerie Johnson was the very first Canadian and Provincial Champion. Her husband, Aaron Johnson innovated as well; he was the first Canadian to compete a Triffis, wrote many of the NCCP coaching manuals, and was a technical committee member of the International Trampoline Federation. They went on to coach other athletes like Christine Tough (Gold Medal World Championships 1982 Women’s DMT), Vicki Bullock (Bronze Medal World Championships 1984 Women’s DMT), and Jeremy Brock (Bronze Medal World Championships 1992 Men’s DMT). Jeremy Brock competed the first triffis on DMT and Catherine Worley was the first Canadian woman to compete a triffis at 1993 Canadian Nationals.
More recently, Sam Smith represented Canada at the 2020ne Olympic Games in Tokyo, accompanied by national coach, Curt DeWolff.
