Kingston Grenadiers rally community for annual “Grens Tackle Tumours” day in support of brain tumour research

KINGSTON, ON — June 2026 — The Kingston Grenadiers, in partnership with the Kingston Brain Tumour Community Group, are once again bringing the community together for the annual Dale Sands Memorial “Grens Tackle Tumours” Day, in support of the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada.

This meaningful initiative honours the legacy of longtime coach Dale Sands, while raising awareness and critical funds for brain tumour research. It also celebrates the strength and resilience of survivors and families in the Kingston community.

Coach Sands was a cornerstone of the Grenadiers organization for more than a decade, shaping generations of athletes and coaches. His legacy continues to live on through the program he helped build and through his son, Ty, now part of the Grenadiers coaching staff.

This year’s events will feature Jackson Giddy, a 12-year-old brain tumour survivor and the U18 team’s honorary captain. Jackson’s courage and determination embody the spirit of the initiative. After undergoing life-saving surgery for a juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma, Jackson has made an inspiring recovery and now proudly participates in the sport he loves.

“Jackson represents everything this day stands for — resilience, courage, and community,” said Alexandra Reyes-Walsh, President of the Kingston Grenadiers. “We are honoured to have him lead our team and inspire everyone involved.”
