Important: Naden Athletic Centre is on the navy base. This means that you will need to show government-issued photo ID at the gate to enter (see accessibility note below).
Google Maps will sometimes send you the wrong way, especially on a bicycle. Make sure that you come through the gate located here, off of Admirals Road at Woodway Road.

schedule

Tuesday Drop-in happens every Tuesday year-round with exceptions as follows:
  • Canceled on March 18, 2025.

What to bring

  • A piece of government-issued photo identification such as a passport, driver’s licence or BCID (this is required by Naden’s security gate as you enter the site; see note below).
  • Payment of approximately $6.50. Payable via debit, credit or cash to the front desk. If you decide to come regularly, a discounted 10-visit pass can also be purchased there for about $55.
  • Basketball shoes or court shoes. Regular runners or cross trainers are technically ok, but they will increase your risk of injury as they won’t grip the gym floor as well or cushion your feet in the right places.
  • A reversible jersey or a light and a dark shirt (this helps with making teams, but isn’t crucial)
  • A water bottle.
  • A size 6 (“women’s size”) basketball (optional). Naden does not provide basketballs, so this makes it easier to warm up.

accessibility

  • Government-issued photo identification: To enter the base, everyone age 16+ needs to present identification at the military base gate. Examples:  status card, driver’s license, passport, BCID, BC healthcare card. The identification cannot be expired. The identification can be issued by any government (doesn’t have to be from BC). Note that the security guards working at the gate exercise a lot of discretion in what is permitted; sometimes they’re very strict, and sometimes they will bend certain requirements (e.g. accept expired ID or school ID). The requirement to produce identification is by the navy base and as such, not something we have power to change. That said, we invite anyone who considers this a barrier to contact us directly to see what may be possible.
  • Covid/Communicable diseases: This program is held indoors and players generally do not mask. At least one fan is often on, and in warmer months, doors are opened to the outdoors for ventilation. Players are directed to stay home if sick or symptomatic.
  • Washrooms: There are both women’s and universal washrooms/changerooms located directly across the hallway from the Upper Gym.
  • Military Location: Island Hoops Basketball Society is not affiliated with CFB Esquimalt or the Canadian Forces. Naden Athletic Centre was simply the only gymnasium that offered us space to play. They have been accommodating and enthusiastic supporters of our programming, and we are grateful. However, we acknowledge that the military affiliation may be uncomfortable for some attendees. We invite anyone who considers this a barrier to contact us directly to see what may be possible.

rules / guidelines / etc.

New players:
We proactively build a welcoming environment for all abilities (beginner to experienced). If you are very new to basketball (e.g. haven't played since middle school, or maybe never), we recommend you show up between 6-6:30. Experienced players are usually leading informal workshops at that time, or shooting around. We would be happy to do an orientation and introduction with you at that time, before it gets busier at 7:00. Experienced basketball players who are coming for the first time are invited to show up earlier or to come at 7:00 and start with a scrim.

Teams:
The court coordinator makes teams at the beginning of the night. There is no draft/picking teams! You will be assigned to a team based on the vibe of the evening (could be by height, could be numbering off, could be personal preference, etc.). The goal is to make relatively evenly-matched teams.

Format:
Games are usually between 6-10 minutes running time with water breaks in between. We adjust this based on attendance and fitness levels.
Usually we have enough players for 3 teams with a few subs per team. Two teams will play each other while one rests, in a "play 2 games then rest 1 game" structure.
We play full-court 4 on 4 (the court is slightly narrower than regulation size).

General rules:
  • Player-to-player defence only (no zone). This allows matchups based on experience and ability, which improves inclusivity of beginner players.
  • Self-officiated
  • Call your own fouls. We are all friends; err on the side of caution and safety.
  • All violations and all fouls, whether in the act of shooting or not, result in the ball resetting to the top of the 3-point line. No free throws.
  • During a stoppage of play (foul or violation) in the front court, ball will be checked at the 3-point line. This is how it is done in 3x3 / half-court games; we have adopted it due to lack of floor space outside the in-bounds areas. This removes sideline or baseline plays.
  • 'Jump balls' go to defence. Always. Don’t fight for a jump ball – keep those shoulders in their sockets please.
If you are new to basketball and/or anything above is confusing to you, please contact us or just come talk to us on a Tuesday at the start of the night and we will help explain and/or demonstrate. We want people to feel comfortable so they can have fun!

history and fine print

This event was started when Island Hoops Basketball Society founding members were looking for somewhere indoor to play in addition to Sunday 3X3 League, especially in the summer off-season. In spring 2023, we approached many different recreation centres and gymnasiums to try to find something that could work, and ended up here at Tuesday Night Drop-in. Although Island Hoops Basketball Society is responsible for facilitating ‘on the court’ and marketing this drop-in event, it is technically coordinated by Naden Athletic Centre recreation staff.  As such, fees, waivers, and final scheduling decisions are not handled by Island Hoops Basketball Society.
