Getting the right equipment helps every player stay safe, confident, and ready to have fun on the field. Below is a checklist of the required and recommended gear for boys' lacrosse.
Helmet
A NOCSAE-approved lacrosse helmet with a face mask and chin strap. (Usually white or team colors.)
Shoulder Pads
Must be lacrosse-specific and meet the NOCSAE ND200 standard for chest protection.
Arm Pads / Elbow Pads
Protects forearms and elbows from checks and contact.
Gloves
Lacrosse-specific gloves that allow flexibility while protecting fingers and wrists.
Stick (Crosse)
Choose a complete stick appropriate for your player’s age and position. Beginners can start with a standard short stick (attack/midfield length).
Mouthguard
A fitted mouthguard is required at all practices and games. (No clear or white mouthguards, per rules.)
Athletic Cup
Strongly recommended for all male players.
Cleats
Molded lacrosse or football cleats — no metal spikes.
Practice pinnie / reversible jersey
Equipment bag or backpack
Water bottle (hydration is key!)
Tape and extra strings for stick maintenance
Try on gear before buying — comfort and mobility matter.
Most local sports stores and online retailers carry full beginner bundles.
Some programs or teammates may have gently used equipment to borrow or purchase.
Always label your gear with your player’s name and team.
