NEW TO SOFTBALL?

Here's what you'll need, what you should consider, and what you can put off for later:

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • Glove. Every fielder needs a glove. You can find them in all price ranges in sporting goods stores or online.

WHAT YOU SHOULD CONSIDER

  • Cleats. Whether playing in the infield (on dirt) or in the outfield (on grass), you’ll want traction. You can get that with any type of cleat (baseball/softball, soccer, football, whatever) or track shoe. Note, no metal spikes are allowed—safety is important!
  • Batting Gloves. Not everyone uses them, not everyone needs them. If you want them, you can find them at any sporting goods store or online.

WHAT YOU CAN PUT OFF BUYING

Of course, you’re welcome to have any of these, but you don’t need them if you’re just getting started.

  • Bat. There’s a wide variety of bats and everyone is an expert in what’s best. If you’re not one of these experts, stay out of the fray. Every team has an abundance of bats—probably will have more bats than players. Let yourself explore the different types and weights, find what works for you, and then consider purchasing one.
  • Ball. If you haven’t looked, softballs are expensive. Unless you have someone to throw the ball around with, you don’t need to buy one. There will be plenty available when you’re out there.
  • Equipment bag. You’ll see a variety of bags that hold bats, gloves, cleats, whatever. If you’ve got all that stuff, yes—best to have an equipment bag. If you’ve got only a glove and maybe batting gloves, you probably don’t need anything…maybe a light duffel/gym bag.
