10 Reasons You're Not Too Old for Kickball

News Image

Let's get this out of the way: nobody at GS3 is here because they peaked in high school athletics. We're here because someone said "you should join my kickball team" and we showed up skeptical, then stayed for the people. Here's why you're not too old — you're actually the perfect age.

1. You Have a Car Now

Remember when you had to beg your mom for a ride? Now you drive yourself to the field like the independent adult you are. You can even bring a cooler. A nice cooler. With wheels.

2. You Appreciate a Good Schedule

In high school, practice was whenever the coach said. Now? Games are at the same day and time every week. You can plan around it. You can look forward to it. You can put it in your Google Calendar in blue and feel organized.

3. You Can Buy the Good Beer

After the game, the team heads to the bar. And because you're a grown adult with a job, you can buy the beer you actually want. No more whatever was cheapest. Treat yourself. You've earned it after that bunt.

4. You're Not Afraid to Look Stupid

This is the secret superpower of adults. A 16-year-old would die of embarrassment missing a catch. You? You'll laugh, post it on Instagram, and get 40 likes. Life experience teaches you that looking silly is usually the most fun option.

5. You Actually Need the Exercise

Be honest: when's the last time you ran somewhere that wasn't for a bus? Kickball is sneaky cardio. You're having too much fun to notice you're sweating. It's the only workout plan that includes nachos afterward.

6. You'll Meet People Outside Your Bubble

Your coworkers are fine. Your college friends are great. But when's the last time you met someone new? GS3 is full of people you wouldn't cross paths with otherwise — teachers, engineers, nurses, artists, all united by the desire to kick a rubber ball and then grab a drink.

7. Theme Nights Hit Different at 30

Remember dressing up for school spirit week? This is that, but  there's a bar involved. Tacky Tourist Night. Superhero Night. Jersey Night. You will absolutely put more effort into a costume now than you did as a child, and you will not regret it.

8. You Can Handle a Loss

Kids cry when they lose. Adults lose, shrug, and order another round. This is the beauty of recreational sports: the score matters just enough to be fun, but not enough to ruin your week. Your therapist will be proud of your healthy relationship with competition.

9. The Bar Afterward Is the Real Game

At 14, after the game you went home and did homework. At 30, after the game you go to Ben & Nick's and debrief every play in excruciating detail while someone insists they "definitely would have caught that if the sun wasn't in their eyes." The bar is where the team becomes family.

10. You Deserve a Weekly Highlight

Life gets routine. Work, errands, sleep, repeat. Having one night a week where you get outside, move your body, see your friends, and feel like you're part of something — that's not childish. That's essential.
