The KMFL lost an instrumental pillar of our organization yesterday—a man so impactful that words are difficult to articulate. The KMFL is deeply saddened by this devastating loss.
John Welsh was many things—family, friend, parent, grandparent, and coach—but above all, he was someone who gave his life to others.
Through his decades with Peterborough Minor Hockey Association and Kinsmen Minor Football, John became a constant presence in the community. There weren’t many who didn’t have the chance to cross paths with him, and those who did were better for it.
For more than 40 years, John coached football, guiding not just players, but entire generations. He didn’t just teach the game—he shaped character, built confidence, and created a sense of belonging. His impact lives on in the hundreds of players, families, and community members who carry his lessons with them.
John had a heart of gold. He cared deeply, and he showed it in the way he treated everyone—especially his players, who he loved like family. Whether it was a word of encouragement, a quiet check-in, or simply being there when someone needed support, John was someone you could always count on. And if you ever watched John on the sidelines, you saw the joy in his face watching his players play. There was pride in every moment, in every rep, in every success they achieved. Their growth and happiness meant everything to him.
His legacy isn’t just in the years he gave, but in the lives he touched. That legacy will continue for many games to come.
We will continue to carry on his good deeds, in all things KMFL.
Rest easy Coach, we'll take it from here.
