The KMFL was founded in 1980 by a group of local individuals with a passion for football. It is a not for profit organization run strictly by volunteers. The original mandate was to give athletes more experience for tackle football before heading to high school, and it remains the focus of our league to date.

The title sponsor for the league was the Kinsmen club of Peterborough and this has remained the same. If you speak to any Kinsmen member from the founding time period they will proudly tell you the KMFL was their baby.

At the time of inception, we had four teams. There was the South Steelers, North Stars, East Eagles and West Chargers and the age group was 11-13. Each athlete was assigned to their team based on their residential geography.

In 2004 the KMFL added 10 year olds to the existing division as demand for football grew but that wasn’t enough, so in 2008 we expanded to two divisions. Junior ages 8,9 and 10 and Senior 11,12 and 13. Also at this time we no longer assigned athletes based on geography, players were assigned based on an evaluation and draft system.

In 2014 the KMFL wanted to align more with Canadian Football so we renamed the four teams to the Argonauts, Ticat’s, Redblacks and Eskimos (Note: In 2021 the Eskimos were renamed the Roughriders)

In 2021 the KMFL was proud to announce that we had joined the provincial sports organization (PSO) Ontario Football Alliance (OFA) and Football Canada.
