Welcome to the Officials section of the website, Football Nova Scotia is always looking for officials join the NSFFOA | Nova Scotia Flag Football Officials Association to participate in the flag leagues, tournaments & events that take place each season. If you are interested in becoming a flag football official, please see below for more details on officiating, certification & clinics for the 2024 season (Revised March 13st, 2024)

Officials 5v5 Flag Level 1 Theory & Technical Clinic(s) - This clinic is the entry point into the NS Flag Football officials training program for new officials with the goal to provide the required training & knowledge in all aspects of the game to prepare them for officiating. the Part 1 Classroom clinic includes the role of officials, rules of the game, interpretations, mechanics & game management, while the Part 2 On-Field clinic is scheduled separately & provides the opportunity to review / practice what they have learned in the classroom in a practice & scrimmage game. In addition, new officials are also required to complete a take home open book Level 1 Exam with a minimum 80% passing grade in order to become an active / certified Level 1 official. Note that you must commit to attend & complete both the classroom + on-field clinics + exam in order to officiate.

Officials 5v5 Flag Refresher Clinic(s) - Officials who have already attended a Level 1 Theory & Technical Clinics in 2010 to 2022 are required to attend one of the Refresher clinics scheduled in order to maintain their active / certified status. Topics covered include officiating / mechanics review, rule changes, interpretations, new reference material, situational reviews / discussions, any current year enforcement updates & a short refresher exam / review during the clinic.

Registration: Football Canada Officials Officials - Register

Officials 5v5 Flag Level 1 / Refresher Clinic - Officials who are certified tackle officials and are new to / would like to officiate flag football can attend the Level 1 / Refresher Clinic for Tackle Officials that was developed in 2020. The goal of this clinic is to provided experienced tackle officials with the nuances of officiating flag football as well as the relevant / condensed information from the Level 1 + Refresher clinics.

Officials 5v5 Flag Level 2 Theory & Technical Clinic - This clinic is for those officials who were recommended & invited to enter the Level 2 Program for 2020 that was cancelled The goal is to provide them with the information, knowledge & concepts to officiate at the next level, successfully pass the certification examination to be completed at the end of the clinic as well as to participate in the program over the course of the year.

Why officiate - As an official you will provide a critical role in helping to promote the ideals of fair play, sportsmanship & leadership for the development of flag football. It is also a fun & exciting way to be part of the game while staying active as well as fit.

Role of an Official - Basically the role of the official is to ensure the game flows within the rules. A skilled official must not only penalize rule violations, but also prevent them from happening. 

What experience is required - No previous experience is required to be an official, if you do have prior football experience or knowledge as a player, coach or fan it can be an asset but it is not essential. All you need is a genuine interest in football, a desire to succeed & basic physical fitness. NS Flag Football is developing its officials’ with training through a combination of clinics, exams, mentoring, evaluations & certification initiatives.

Is there a minumum age to be an offcial - Yes, effective in 2016 potential new officials must be at least 13 years old on or before the date of the Level 1 Theory & Technical clinic you are attending.

Do officials get paid - Yes they do, Level 1 first year in-training officials for the youth leagues are paid a standard game fee of $12 per game, Level 1 second year+ officials for youth leagues are paid a standard game fee of $13 per game while the men’s & women’s leagues pay $15 per game for Level 1 officials. Level 2 officials are paid $16 per game for the youth leagues and $18 per game for the senior leagues.

Is there a cost to register as an official / attend training clinics - Effective 2022 there is a Football NS + Football Canada registration fee of $35 that includes your memberships, insurance and Level 1 or Refresher clinic(s) required to maintain your active status. In addition, those officials invited to become Level 2 officials will pay an additional $20 for the clinic.
