U13 DIVISION (2013–2014): BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

U13 is a pivotal year in a hockey player’s development. Skills begin to take shape and a competitive spirit starts to ignite. The U13 Division is designed to identify and nurture emerging talent, laying the groundwork for future hockey success.

Program Overview:

  • Program Levels: The Comets U13 Division will ice AA, B, and C teams. AA competes in the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League (SFHL); B and C teams participate in SMHA leagues.
  • Skill Refinement: Build on the foundations established in earlier years with emphasis on skating, passing, shooting, puck confidence, and edge control.
  • Tactical Growth: Deepen game understanding—reading play, supporting teammates, smart puck movement, and positioning in all zones.
  • Physical Preparation: Prepare for increasing pace and contact levels ahead. Develop strength, balance, and agility to safely compete as the game speeds up.
  • Team Placement: Evaluations help us create balanced rosters that support both individual development and team success.

By participating in U13, your daughter will showcase her abilities and begin an exciting journey of athletic and personal growth. We strive to provide an environment where players can thrive, learn, and grow their passion for hockey.

Yours in Hockey,

Kourtney Wesolowski

EVALUATION INFORMATION

What to Expect:

In U13, the emphasis shifts toward competitive play and game-like scenarios. Evaluators will assess each player’s ability to perform under pressure and make sound hockey decisions. The process includes:

  • On-Ice Assessments: Players will showcase their skills and teamwork through drills, scrimmages, and bubble games. Evaluators will focus on skating, passing, puck control, shooting, and work ethic.
  • Scrimmages: Demonstrate teamwork, decision-making, and overall hockey IQ in 4-on-4 scrimmages and bubble games.
  • Groupings: To begin the evaluation process, players are placed in mixed-ability groups to balance numbers across sessions. Expect a range of skill levels on the ice together.
  • Player Ratings: Independent evaluators provide ratings based on on-ice performance throughout the process. The division coordinator oversees the evaluation program.

As players progress, we assess both individual skills and teamwork. Scrimmages become more competitive to prepare players for higher levels of play.

Important Information:

  • Registration: All players must be fully registered, with fees paid in full, before participating in evaluations.
  • Equipment: Full hockey equipment (including a neck guard) is required for all skates. Please remove player names from helmets and cover/remove team stickers. Players must wear plain or Comets socks.
  • Jerseys: Jerseys will be provided for evaluations; the number on that jersey will serve as the player’s evaluation number for both skill skates.
  • Evaluation Dates: Check the Comets Zone Hockey website for specific evaluation dates and times. Regrouping will occur throughout the process, so please check for regular updates.
  • Evaluators: Player ratings are completed by off-ice, independent evaluators.
  • Volunteer Opportunities: We welcome volunteers. Sign up at the registration table or contact the division coordinator if you can assist with gate duties or other roles.

Note: You MUST report to the Comets desk before your second session to register. This is essential to ensure you are evaluated correctly. If your daughter is unable to attend an evaluation session, please email the division coordinator.

How Parents Can Help

Parents play a crucial role in supporting their child’s hockey journey. Here are some tips:

  • Encourage and Support: Offer positive reinforcement and celebrate your child’s efforts, regardless of the outcome.
  • Set Realistic Expectations: Help your child understand that evaluations are a learning experience, and not every player will make the top team.
  • Focus on Development: Emphasize skill growth and having fun over winning.
  • Be a Good Sportsperson: Demonstrate good sportsmanship by cheering for all players—not just your own child.
