It is the philosophy of Western High School Athletic Department that interscholastic athletic programs are essential to the success of the total educational program; thus the athletic program is designed to provide important learning experiences for each student who participates. It is our belief that interscholastic athletics complements our strong academic programs and assists in providing Western High School students with a well-rounded education.
We believe that participation in high school athletics builds character and teaches values that enable students to be happy, become better citizens, and instill confidence and poise. Athletics is an avenue to demonstrate that race, color, creed, sex, and economic status need not be obstacles for participation and success.
At all levels of competition, Western High School coaches will strive to make every athlete’s experience a positive one. Too often, people lose sight of the true purpose of high school sports. Although we enter every contest prepared for victory, we will not possess the “win at all costs” attitude that is prevalent at other levels of athletics.
It is also our position that students are to have the opportunity to participate in as many sports as they choose. Students will not be discriminated against in the selection process for one sport due to participation in another.
One of our goals is to provide the student body and our community with the finest athletic program possible; a program both athletically competitive as well as respected for its commitment to fair play and adherence to the rules. To accomplish this goal, the coaching staff is committed to developing athletes who serve as role models for their peers as well as the younger members of the Western High School community.
Our coaches will strive to teach and model the values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and fair play. When good coaching instills a sense of pride, dedication, sacrifice, and teamwork, success and winning follow and will take on a proper perspective in the total educational program.
