The Springside Figure Skating Club was originally organized in 1974 as a club affiliated with the Yorkton Skating Club. In 1983, the club decided to break away from the Yorkton club to become a stand-alone club. Along the line, “Figure” was dropped from the name and it simply became the Springside Skating Club. While there have been many changes over the years, one of the constants has been the desire of parents and community members to offer a fun atmosphere for skaters of all ages and skill levels. The club currently offers non-competitive Learn-to-Skate and Power skating programs. The purpose of the club is to encourage the instruction, practice, enjoyment and advancement of its members in all aspects of skating, encompassing members from 3 to 18 years old!
There will be four levels of skating offered this season – PreSkate, CanSkate, StarSkate and Powerskate. Having trouble deciding where your child should be registered? Here's a quick guide to help:
PreSkate - A 30 minute non-parented class for children ages 3-5 who have not had any significant time on skates. It is designed to introduce children to the ice and help them become comfortable. This program teaches children the basics of how to get up when they fall down, how to move forward, basic backward movement and how to stop.
CanSkate - This program is for skaters who have completed the PreCanSkate program and can get up on their own or have been on skates previously and are comfortable with the skills listed above in PreSkate. CanSkate provides skaters with a strong foundation for figure skating, hockey, speed skating and ringette. Gliding, stroking, cross-cuts, turns, stops and edges are examples of the skills that skaters will work on. Each session is 60 minutes.
StarSkate - StarSkate offers opportunities for skaters to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and interpretive skating. Each session is 90 minutes.
PowerSkate – An action-packed, high energy instructional program geared toward hockey and ringette skaters that focuses on balance, power, agility, speed and endurance. This is geared towards skaters who already have basic forward and backward skating skills (they must be able to skate the length of the rink using alternate strides) and are able to stop on command without use of the boards. Each session is 60 minutes.
