In what some are calling the "season of the youth" and others the "season of the unknown", Vegas has been flumoxed as to which team is the favorite to win The Fazio Cup. Opening night is Thursday with April 7th a long ways away.
In the Magic Division, the Pittsburgh Pisces are a track team ready to run right out of the gate. Green Lantern has a balanced lineup while Red Rocket is looking for immediate lift-off with two summer league champs on the roster. The Magical Johnsons can't wait to unleash its lockdown defense. Who will come out on top? Really, it's anyone's guess.
In the Bird Division, some are predicting The Matadors might need to make a big comeback with injuries to two key players to start. Too Big to Fail may need to be reminded that the OBBL isn't the US government--no one will be coming to bail Ed out. The Grizzly Balls have the potential to be an offensive juggernaut while The Monstars may have the best starting five in the league. It promises to be a real dog fight.
There is also the question of who will be the leading vote-getter for December's all-star game. Even more important is the question of who will lead their team to glory. The list of potential players is long, but here are five for your consideration.
Jack Callaghan: A coveted pick, Callaghan is respected for his ability to make a positive impact at all five positions, but is revered for his selfless play. Defensive matchups haven't gotten any easier for him as Grizzly Balls will be expecting him to carry a heavy load.
Christian Collette: No one in recent memory has made such an impact upon entering the league. All captains not named Cohen know they will have to stop Collette, who distributes beautifully from the post when not finishing himself. It is, pun intended, a tall order.
Tim Henry: Although nursing a bum ankle at the moment, memories of his post-season performance from last spring are still fresh in everyone's mind. Henry hit the game-winner to deliver The Fazio Cup to The Steel and he was a beast on the boards all season long. He forms quite a tandem with captain Mark Steffen on a team loaded with three-point shooters.
Andrew Lamb: The fire has been burning in Lambo since last post-season and the sky is the limit for what he may do this year. With Dodd cutting and Gulick camped out to shoot threes, he has the potential to lead the league in points and assists. New captain Jon Dodd certainly hopes so.
Dave Orr: If there is a fire burning in Lamb, it is a raging inferno for Orr. He's clearly been in the lab and comes into the season in the best shape we've seen since he joined the OBBL. Nobody protects the rim better and along with Mike Schwarz will be giving opposing offenses fits. It's Cup or bust for Dave Orr.
