Step Up to the Plate: Umpire With District 8 This Season
Be the Third Team on the Field — Umpires Wanted!
Little League Alberta District 8 is gearing up for another great season, and we’re looking for new and returning umpires to join us. Umpiring is a fun, rewarding way to stay connected to the game, earn money, and play a vital role in creating a positive experience for our players, coaches, and families.
Whether you’re a player looking for your first job, a parent or sibling wanting to give back, or someone who simply loves baseball, umpiring is for you.
Who Can Umpire?
If you are age 12 or older as of May 1, 2026, you are eligible to umpire in District 8.
No prior umpiring experience is required. We provide training, clinics, mentoring, and ongoing support throughout the season.
Why Become a Little League Umpire?
Umpiring is more than just making calls—it’s about being part of the game in a meaningful way.
As an umpire, you will:
Veteran umpires often say the best compliment they receive is a simple: “Good game, Blue.”
Life Lessons That Last Beyond the Field
The skills learned as an umpire extend far beyond baseball and will benefit you for years to come:
These are real‑world skills that translate directly to school, future employment, and post‑secondary education.
A Great Addition to Your Resume
For youth umpires especially, umpiring is an excellent first job and a strong addition to any resume. It demonstrates:
Many former umpires credit their experience for helping them succeed in future jobs and leadership roles.
Mandatory Clinic Attendance
All District 8 umpires are required to attend umpire clinics for the levels they intend to officiate during the upcoming season.
Each level presents different game situations, mechanics, and expectations. Mandatory clinic attendance ensures umpires are properly trained, confident, and prepared to officiate at the appropriate level.
In recent years, we have seen some returning umpires miss clinics. Moving forward, District 8 is placing a stronger emphasis on rules knowledge, positioning, and overall readiness. Our goal is to consistently improve the experience for players, coaches, and families by continuing to raise the standard of umpiring across District 8.
What happens if I miss a clinic?
District 8 umpire clinics are mandatory, as they are a key part of preparing umpires for the season. Our umpire instructors are volunteers, and the clinic format has evolved from a single weekend to a two‑week clinic schedule to better support training and development.
We understand that umpires may have other commitments, however, our instructors also have limited availability and we can only offer a set number of clinic dates. As a result, we ask all umpires to do their best to make reasonable accommodations to attend the required clinics.
If you are unable to attend a District 8 Little League clinic and your schedule permits, you may attend an approved Baseball Alberta umpire clinic in lieu of our Little League clinic.
If you anticipate missing a clinic or have questions about eligibility or alternatives, please contact your local Umpire‑in‑Chief (UIC) as early as possible.
Annual Umpire Fee
There are several costs associated with running and supporting the District 8 umpire program, including:
Many of these items require replacement each season due to growth, wear and tear, or loss. The annual fee helps offset a portion of these costs and supports the ongoing development and sustainability of the umpire program.
All umpires registered to umpire in District 8 are responsible for paying the annual umpire fee prior to the first umpire clinic they will be attending. There is one flat fee, regardless of the level worked or the number of clinics attended.
We hope families view this fee as an investment in developing well-prepared, confident umpires and in maintaining a strong and consistent umpire program across District 8.
