Pirates Power Past Bandits Behind Seven-Run Third Inning

The Calgary Pirates turned a one-run game into a runaway in a matter of minutes Saturday, erupting for seven runs in the third inning on their way to a commanding 10-0 victory over the Calgary Bandits at Diamond 1.
The Pirates' offence pounded out 15 hits, launched four home runs and created havoc on the basepaths with six stolen bases, while Jeremy Hickey and the Calgary defense kept the Bandits off the scoreboard.
Roberto Valdez opened the scoring in the top of the second, driving a solo home run over the left-field fence to give Calgary a 1-0 advantage.
One inning later, the Pirates broke the game wide open.
Don Peters started the barrage with a two-run homer to center field before Garrett Russell and Cooper Finch each followed with solo shots to center. Nathan McGregor added a two-run single, and another run crossed the plate on a steal of home as Calgary sent seven runs across on nine hits in the inning.
By the time the dust settled, the Pirates had transformed a tight contest into an 8-0 lead.
McGregor was at the center of the offensive attack, finishing with three hits and two RBIs, while Daryl Vandenbos also collected three hits. Peters drove in two, while Finch and Jay Derrington each produced multi-hit performances.
The Pirates were equally aggressive once they reached base. Vandenbos and Colin McMurdo each swiped multiple bags as Calgary finished with six stolen bases.
While the offence supplied plenty of support, Hickey took care of the rest in the circle.
The Pirates starter worked three and two-thirds scoreless innings, surrendering only three hits while striking out six and walking two. The Bandits managed singles from Zeb Corboy, Neil Ruddock and Darren Nickel, but were unable to string together enough offence to break through.
Rob Reid started for Calgary Bandits and worked two and one-third innings, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out three without issuing a walk.
Both clubs played clean defensively, finishing the contest without committing an error.
For the Pirates, it was an emphatic all-around performance — 15 hits, four home runs, six stolen bases, flawless defence and a shutout from the pitching staff — as Calgary rolled to the 10-0 victory.
