Pirates Erase Four-Run Deficit, Edge Jays 5-4
Calgary Pirates wiped away an early four-run deficit and completed the comeback with a 5-4 victory over Calgary Jays on Friday at Diamond 1.
The Jays wasted little time applying pressure, sending four runs across in the top of the first inning. Dantin Winnipeg opened the scoring with a bases-loaded walk before Paul Hickey brought home another run on a fielder’s choice. Brandon Doering followed with a fielder’s-choice grounder that allowed two more runs to score, giving Calgary an early 4-0 advantage.
Pirates starter Ryan Simpson quickly regained his composure and kept the Jays off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, giving his offence an opportunity to climb back into contention.
The Pirates broke through with a game-tying rally in the bottom of the third. Cooper Finch delivered a run-scoring single, while Garrett Russell’s double helped erase the remainder of the deficit and pull the Pirates even at four.
One inning later, Nathan McGregor completed the comeback. With the score still tied in the bottom of the fourth, McGregor lined an RBI single to bring home the decisive run and give the Pirates their first lead of the afternoon, 5-4.
Simpson made the slim advantage stand, finishing off a complete-game victory in the circle. The right-hander allowed four runs—two earned—on three hits over five innings, striking out five and issuing five walks.
Paul Robb started for the Jays and allowed two runs on five hits over two innings, recording one strikeout without surrendering a walk. Chax Tshambani worked the final two innings and was charged with the loss after allowing three runs—only one earned—on three hits, with two strikeouts and one walk.
Finch paced the Pirates’ offence by going 2-for-4. Russell, Finch, McGregor and Jay Derrington each drove in a run during the comeback.
Robb supplied two of Calgary’s three hits, finishing 2-for-3 from the leadoff spot. Hickey, Doering and Winnipeg each recorded an RBI, while Winnipeg reached base three times via the walk. The Jays also turned one double play defensively.
Calgary Pirates will return to action Saturday morning against Calgary Bandits, while Calgary Jays will look to rebound against Calgary Raiders later Saturday.
