Mikael Dobson

This week, we're huddling with Mikael Dobson, a 29 year old gridiron guru from Cornwall. You might know him as the star quarterback for Wheeler & Monroe, a position he’s dominated for the past four years. But his football roots run even deeper, tracing back to his days as a receiver for the OVFL Wildcats and the CCVS Raiders. Here’s a fun fact: Mikael’s entry into the flag football scene was a happy accident! Back in 2020, his buddies and former coworkers, Scott Lemoyre, Robby Murdock, and Nathan Pataky, convinced him to join the league. The kicker? They had no idea he was a seasoned football player, only knowing him from his hockey exploits. Imagine their surprise when Mikael stepped onto the field and unleashed his inner quarterback! It just goes to show you never know what hidden talents your friends might be hiding.

When it comes to pinpointing a favorite moment, Mikael admits it's tough. But one experience consistently gives him a rush: those playoff games in November, under the lights. There’s something about the crisp night air and the high stakes that transport him back to his childhood. It's that pure, unadulterated joy of the game, a feeling many of us can relate to whether we're on the field or cheering from the stands.               For Mikael, flag football is much more than just a sport; it's a vital part of his life. It’s an opportunity to reconnect with good friends, both teammates and rivals alike. Beyond the camaraderie, it’s a fantastic way to stay active and get some exercise. In a world where everyday struggles can feel overwhelming, flag football offers a much needed escape. Mikael emphasizes how playing sports, be it hockey, basketball, or baseball, has become his ultimate stress reliever, allowing him to disconnect and recharge. He looks forward to hitting the field every Sunday and Wednesday, a testament to the positive impact the sport has on his well being. Looking ahead, Mikael is focused on improving his game and helping Wheeler & Monroe become a consistent contender for league championships. With an influx of talented younger players graduating from the Wildcats varsity program, the future looks bright for the team. Mikael’s commitment to mentorship and team growth is truly inspiring.

Finally, Mikael extends a huge shoutout to the successful first season of the Girls OWFL Wildcats program! As a father of two daughters with a deep love for football, he fervently hopes the program continues to push and pave the way for the future of women in football in the Cornwall area. He wishes them nothing but further success in the years to come, and we echo that sentiment! The growth of women’s sports is something we can all celebrate.
