Flag Football Player Profile: Jeffred Simeon
Jeffred Simeon has lived an interesting life in his 22 years. “I was born in Nassau, Bahamas, but moved to Canada at the age of 9,” he says. Before he went to college in Cornwall—he graduated from the Police Foundation’s program in June of 2023—he was living in Hamilton and attended Delta Secondary School. “I moved to Cornwall in June of 2019,” he explains, “and went to St. Lawrence Secondary School for my grade 12 year and graduated.”
Jeffred hadn’t played flag football until the summer of 2020 when Eric Bowman, one of his closest friends from high school, asked him if he wanted to play for his team. “Since I had nothing better to do that summer,” he says, “I accepted and quickly learned the game. Ever since I was a little boy, I’ve always been an active person and always loved playing sports.”
This young athlete’s main sport is basketball, but he also enjoys football and ultimate frisbee. “I am currently on the men’s basketball league, hoping to make it to the finals and win my first championship,” he says. When he’s not competing, he’s working security around the city of Cornwall. Jeffred aspires to become a police officer in the next couple
of years. “I am working full-time while making time for everything that’s important to me,” he says, “which is sports, family, and friends.”
This season Jeffred plays for team Stolli and is looking to win a championship. “The thing I enjoy most about the league,” Jeffred says, “is how fun and competitive it is. During the games teams are going 100% to try and win, but after the games, everyone just goes back to joking around and having fun.”
Jeffred’s major accomplishment so far is being named defensive MVP and winning the championship in the most recent all-star game. “That meant something to me,” he explains, “because I never saw myself as a defensive type of player, so winning that award gave me a bit of confidence going into the season.” Another of his accomplishments is coming in second in the Rookie of the Year race in his first season, even though this sport was completely new to him.
“I have many highlights from the three years I’ve been in the league,” he says. “I have a couple where I dodged a whole team on a kick return and scored the touchdown, but my favourite highlight has to be when my quarterback gave me a corner route and I caught the ball to score a touchdown over 2 defenders that have a clear height advantage over me.”
