City of Springfield
Parks, Buildings, and Recreation Management
July 28, 2020

Dear Cyr Arena Client:

The City of Springfield’s Department of Parks, Buildings, and Recreation Management is reviewing options relative to opening Cyr Arena in Forest Park for skating/hockey rentals while operating under the protocols instituted by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts during the COVID -19 pandemic.

We are sending this letter to ascertain if your group would rent ice time at Cyr Arena given the current restrictions placed on playing hockey in a skating rink at this time as ice hockey has been placed in the “Higher Risk” category by the state. Some of these restrictions include:

  • Only “Level One” type of play; meaning only no-contact workouts, aerobic conditioning, individual skill work, and drills are allowed. No games are allowed at this time.
  • No more than twenty-five (25) players/skaters in the building at one time. The number of coaches and staff should be limited. No spectators allowed in the facility for skaters 18 years and older. One spectator per skater is allowed in the building per each skater aged under 18 years old. Spectators must wear facial coverings and maintain six feet of social distance at all times.
  • Locker rooms will be limited to 50% capacity. Showers will be closed.
  • No congregating in the facility or parking lot before or after ice sheets.
  • Please note these rules will be strictly enforced.

The city’s decision to open Cyr Arena will be based on updates from the Commonwealth relative to restrictions for ice hockey arenas, any changes on COVID-19 phases, and your response to us regarding your ice time usage needs. Please contact me at 413-265-0233 or mbrowning@springfieldcityhall.com and let me know what your commitment will be for Cyr Arena ice time given the restrictions and limitations listed above.

The city’s goal is to continue to meet the recreational needs of all of our park users, while adhering to the necessary guidelines and protocols in place due to the pandemic. Thank you for your understanding and assistance.

Sincerely,

Michael Browning
