sand volleyball rules


General

1. No carry-ins are allowed, and any food or beverages brought in will be confiscated by staff.

2: All players must enter through the main entrance and not the volleyball gates. The gate is only used as an emergency exit and to retrieve balls from over the fence. All children and guests must remain off the courts and must be supervised.

3: No pets are allowed.

4: All players must be at least 18 years old, rostered via TeamLinkt, and sign the waiver in order to play. 

  1. ID will be checked if age is questionable, and if no ID is available that player will not be allowed to participate.

5: If any teams have players under the age of 21 that are drinking alcoholic beverages, they will be removed from the league with no refund.

6: No smoking is allowed on the courts, and any cigarette butts should be disposed of in the buckets provided at each table.

7: Teams may not play in both social and competitive leagues; they may share a captain, but must otherwise have different rosters.

8: Leagues must have at least 6 teams or they will be canceled with the fees returned to the teams. 

9: Each team must provide their own ball for practice and play.

Team Rules

1: Team rosters have a maximum of 12 players and a minimum of 4 players. 

2: If playing with 6 players, teams must have a minimum of 3 women. If playing with 4 or 5 players, teams must have a minimum of 2 women.

3: No new subs will be allowed during playoffs.

Match Play

1: Team captains (or a representative from the team) will call a coin toss to begin the match. The winner will choose to either serve first or choose their starting side.

2: Matches will consist of 3 games to 21 points.

  1. All games will be rally scoring and won by a 2 point advantage.
  2. There is a score cap of 25 points if a 2 point advantage has not been reached.

3: Matches will start at their scheduled time.

  1. A grace period will be allowed. After 5 minutes, the first game will be forfeited. After 10 minutes, the match will be forfeited. This will also apply to playoff games.
  2. Any late players or subs must rotate into the back row, middle position after a point and before the next serve.
  3. All 3 games will have a play limit of 55 minutes, including playoffs.

Game Play

1: Serves can be made from any position behind the back line within the sidelines.

2: No blocking or attacking a serve is allowed.

3: Players may bump or set a serve.

4: A ball crossing the net must pass between the support poles.

5: If a team hits the ball 2 or more times, one of the hits must be made by a woman. Only 3 hits per team are allowed before the play is dead.

6: If 2 players hit the ball at the same time, it is considered 1 hit and either player may hit the ball again. If one of the players involved is a woman, it will be considered a hit made by a woman.

7: The server must stay in the back row if the team is playing with the minimum of 4 players.

8: The ball may touch any part of the body to be considered a legal hit.

9: Blocking is not considered a hit and may be hit by a player again.

10: Players may not reach across the net except for blocking and attack hits.

11: Spiking is allowed; however, aggressive spiking is not allowed in social leagues.

12: If a player touches the net, the play is dead and their team will forfeit the point.

13: A ball in contact with the boundary line is in.

14: Any ball out of bounds is in if it is touched by a player before touching the ground.

15: A served ball touching the net but landing in bounds is a live ball.

16: If a stray ball from another court lands on the court, the point will be replayed.

17: Additional rules:

  1. Competitive: When only one male player is in the front row at service, one male back row player may move forward for the purpose of blocking and may not participate in attack.
  2. Social: If a team is playing too aggressively (determined by the referees), they will receive 2 warnings. On their third offense they will forfeit that game. 

Referees

1) The referee's decisions are final. A referee may have a point replayed. If you have a disagreement with a referee, please bring it to the attention of the volleyball director that same evening.

Weather

1) If volleyball is being canceled, all players will be messaged via TeamLinkt and it will be posted on our Facebook page at Classic Lanes OC Volleyball.

2) Games may be delayed, and will be determined by Classic Lanes.

3) Teams will not play and no one will be allowed on the courts with excessive lighting. Safety is our number one priority.

Make-Up Games

1) Any cancelled matches will be made up on the following Saturday or Sunday.

2) If a game is to be made up, teams will be responsible for refereeing their own games. The only exception is for championship games for Monday through Thursday sessions.

Team Captain Responsibilities

1) Captains are responsible for having any new players on their team register via TeamLinkt.

2) Captains (or a representative from the team if the captain is unavailable) are responsible for verifying their score sheet. If anything is incorrect, they must bring it to the referee's attention immediately.

3) For sessions without referees, it is the captain's responsibility to turn in their score sheet.
