Rule Spotlight

4/22/26

"Slide or get out of the way" rule:

This rule is defined in the USSSA Slowpitch rulebook. The official wording is as follows:

Section 5
V. Whenever the catcher or any fielder clearly has the ball and is waiting to tag the runner, the runner must slide or attempt to avoid contact. If, in the umpire’s judgment, the runner deliberately and forcefully runs into the defensive player, the runner is declared out and shall be ejected from the game. The ball is declared dead and all other runners must return to the last base touched at the time of the collision"

We see this the most at home plate when a runner is going full speed through the plate. If the catcher has the ball at the plate, you must either slide or "bail out" to not contact the catcher. Fielders may not block the path of the runner if they don't have the ball, but once they get it, they have the right away and the runner needs to either slide or peel out to avoid any contact.

Let's stay safe out there!
