Woodstock's Most Famous Landmarks and Activities

Boyle Grave Site

Visit "Klondike" Joe Boyle's grave site in the Presbyterian Cemetery on Vansittart Avenue. Boyle made a fortune in the Yukon as a gold miner. During World War I, he raised his own 50-man machine gun unit and became an honorary colonel. He helped to improve the railway system in Russia, and after the Russian Revolution in 1917, he was responsible for the collection and distribution of food.

Joe had many extraordinary adventures while acting as a spy for Britain and France. Boyle became a close friend and advisor of Queen Marie of Romania, was made a Romanian national hero and received the highest awards from Russia, France and Britain.

Farmers Market

The weekly Farmers' Market, which features the best of Oxford County's bounty, is held every Saturday at the Woodstock Fairgrounds from 7 a.m. through 12 p.m. Products include cheese, bakery, meat counters, produce, crafts and flowers.

Springbank Snow Countess Monument

This life size concrete statue was made to honour a record-setting milk producing Holstein Friesian cow. The designer was local artist Ross Butler. The statue was erected on August 4, 1937.

Snow Countess was born on November 18, 1919 and died August 9, 1936. During her lifetime, she produced 9,062 pounds of butterfat, impressive at that time. It was erected by the Holstein Friesian Association of Canada on the Springbank Farm of T.R. Dent, owner of Snow Countess, at a cost of $4,000. The statue was recently moved to its new home at the northwest corner of Dundas Avenue and Springbank Avenue.

Old St. Paul's Anglican Church

Visit the historic Old St. Paul's Church whose history is closely linked to Woodstock's own. The first service was held in the church on June 29, 1834, to a congregation of 11. The cemetery holds the grave sites of many of our first settlers. Tours can be arranged.

Jakemans Maple Syrup Farm

For over 140 years, Jakeman's has been perfecting Ontario maple syrup craftmanship. Five generations of maple producers exploring new flavours and techniques has made their products famous far and wide. Jakeman's Maple Products range from granulated maple sugar, maple spread and maple syrup (all taste great with local cheese and fruit)! Guaranteed to please any maple lover.

Gunns Hill Cheese

Gunn's Hill Artisan Cheese is a small artisan cheese plant nestled within the rolling hills of Gunn's Hill Rd., in Oxford County, Ontario.  The cheeses produced at Gunn's Hill Artisan Cheese are truly unique although you can taste the Swiss influence from techniques and recipes Shep learned while making cheese in the town of Handeck, in the Swiss Alps.  Today, there are two full time cheese makers and a team of staff that work diligently to produce some of Canada's finest award winning cheeses. Owners Shep Ysselstein and Colleen Bator are proud of the little thriving business that is now seeing their cheeses in over 300 locations across Ontario!
