SCOTT HOLMES |
If you have played in the minor division during the era of Scott Holmes – you know who Scott Holmes is. Scott’s child-like enthusiasm for the game of hockey is admirable for a player of any age. Scott is so encouraging of his teammates and his opponents, and it is no surprise that he is the only 3-time winner of the Sportsmanship Award. Scott’s enthusiasm carries on during the week, as many can’t wait to read his weekly game summary that he posts on Facebook. Helmets and sticks in the air for a true GHL Legend.
FACTOID - During his rookie year, he became the oldest playing GHL goalie. Over a decade later, Scott still maintains that record.
KRIS HOY |
Throughout much of his GHL career, Kris has been the definition of a 'Stay at Home Defenseman' while being a 'Stay in the Middle of the Team Conversation at Silks' type of guy afterwards. Kris is the epitome of someone who loves the mentality of team atmosphere. He does not go very long without laughter and you can just tell how much Kris loves the GHL, and how much the GHL players love Kris in the league. For many years, Kris and Timothy Salisbury co-GMed a GHL team (usually the Sabres), and both enjoyed working together to bring many players into the GHL fold. Kris has been an integral part of the league, and the league is much better off because of him.
FACTOID - 9 Seasons played Sabres - 0 Championships with them. 1 Season played Canadiens - 1 Championship with them.
GEOFF HUNT |
The ‘quiet giant’ was also the most league’s most reliable - If GHL was being played on Saturday Evening – Geoff was there. The GHL Iron Man broke the record of 188 consecutive games played without missing a game. The original music man – Geoff brought the music to the rink. Geoff loved being in the background but enjoyed being part of the social scene (except for his elaborate costumes around Halloween). For as quiet as Geoff was, his peers did recognize his place in the GHL by awarding him the Die Hard Award a record 3 times along with another league award for dedication. Geoff Hunt’s massive legacy will be around for years to come.
FACTOID - The GHL has been a family affair for the Hunts. Geoff has played on teams with his son, two daughters, and wife.
DAN AND KRISTEN LAFFERTY |
There are just a few people that have been in the league long enough to remember Dan and Kristen not as a couple. Dan and Kristen have been cornerstones in the league’s successes and have been the heartbeat of almost every team that have been on, many times being the team’s GMs. Dan and Kristen (and their teams following their example), play hard to win, and as soon as the whistle blows to end the game, they have the same demeanour back at Silks regardless of the on-ice result. Kristen has been a goalie and a skater over the years and is a very intelligent hockey player. Dan is currently the second highest scorer in GHL history, and is on pace to become the highest scorer in GHL Major Divison history during this next Winter Season.
FACTOID - Dan is one of 3 players to have scored over 100 GHL Points with 2 franchises, doing it with the Canucks and the Leafs. Kristen, along with her brother Scott Jarvis, as well as brothers Steve and Chris Laubach, are the only two pairs of siblings to BOTH BE GOALIES IN THE GHL
TIMOTHY SALISBURY |
“Once a Sabre, always a Sabre” – Timothy has echoed this statement many times. Anybody knows that sentiment holds true as Tim has held many Christmas parties and team parties and the Sabres alumni that attends keeps growing. Once you have played with Tim, that bond is always there. Tim is a passionate NHL Sabres fan and jumped at every chance to play for the Sabres in the GHL…12 times to be exact. Tim was masterful at creating a wonderful team atmosphere both at the arena and afterwards till the wee hours of the morning at Silks. A true GHL Legend.
FACTOID - Timothy is the only player to win 4 consecutive GHL sessions in a row (2012S, 2012/13W, 2013S, 2013/14W)
RICHARD SCAPILlaTI |
‘Scap’ is one of the most colorful characters to ever be part of the GHL. He has been player, goalie, gm, referee and most importantly the 2nd GHL Commish (2009 – 2014). Richard has a passion for people and many of the ideas that he brought about while in the role of league commisioner are still being used in the league today. You will always find him being the life of the party, whether that’s on the ice, or away from the rink. Regardless of what role he is playing, Richard has been instrumental in so many people having a great GHL experience.
FACTOID - The 5 GHL Championships that Richard has won as a player is tied for most in league history with 4 other players.
KATHY WEIER |
Kathy is the only player to play every GHL Winter Seasons. Being a local resident in Virgil, Kathy has been an invaluable resource to the league management and has been a wonderful sounding board for all things GHL. Kathy is an active participant in everything that the GHL has to offer. All teammates love Kathy and she is deeply entrenched in the GHL scene on Saturday evenings. Kathy loves the game of hockey and her enthusiasm for playing is as strong today as it was when the league started.
FACTOID - Kathy is tied with 4 other people for the most Minor Championships with 3.
