For many years, West Ottawa Basketball Association has been fortunate to work alongside schools and community partners who open their doors so our youth can play the game they love. We are deeply grateful for those partnerships and they will continue to remain essential to our programs going forward. At the same time, something important has changed. Basketball continues to grow across our community. Each season, more youth want to play than the existing gym time can support. Programs fill quickly. Waitlists grow and despite everyone’s best efforts, some youth are left without a place to play. That reality is what brings us to this moment. Together with Everybody Growing Church and through a broader community effort called OneCourt Alliance, we are fulfilling a long-term goal and taking a long-term step to expand gym space in West Ottawa and specifically in Stittsville. The goal is simple and grounded: to ensure more of our community has access to a safe, welcoming place to play, connect and belong by building a community gymnasium. This new community gym is not about replacing the partnerships we have and value. It’s about strengthening the structures that already exist and adding capacity so schools, clubs, families and community groups can better serve the youth who rely on them. As an educator (Principal at West Carleton High School) and Coach, I see firsthand what sport provides beyond the game itself. Basketball builds confidence while teaching teamwork and resilience. More importantly, it gives young people a sense of belonging. When youth lose access to sport, they don’t just lose activity; they lose connection and that’s why this project matters. OneCourt Alliance was formed to bring the community together around this shared need. It is a non-profit initiative, rooted in local leadership, and focused entirely on creating lasting benefits for youth and families in our area. Every decision is guided by stewardship, transparency and long-term community impact. As this work moves forward, we invite members of our community to take part. Some will contribute their time and expertise, others will help spread the word and some may choose to invest financially in building this shared community asset. Every contribution stays local, with 100% of financial support going directly toward creating access, opportunity and a space where our community can grow together. There will be more information on sponsorship opportunities coming soon. Thank you for your continued trust in West Ottawa Basketball and for the many ways you support our members. We will continue to keep you updated as the project evolves. Sincerely, |
