Jays Survive Raiders’ Furious Late Rally, Hang On for 9–7 Williams Cup Win

The Calgary Jays looked to have Saturday’s Williams Cup matchup firmly in hand.
The Calgary Raiders had other ideas.
After building a seven-run advantage, the Jays watched the Raiders come roaring back in the late innings, but managed to record the final outs and escape Diamond 2 with a dramatic 9–7 victory.
Calgary struck first in the second inning when Jonah Jerry delivered an RBI single to put the Jays on the board. They doubled the advantage an inning later when James Dunphy battled through a seven-pitch at-bat before driving a single into center field for a 2–0 lead.
The Raiders answered in the bottom of the fourth.
Jamie Scholten supplied the response with one swing, launching a solo home run to center field to cut into the Jays’ advantage.
But Calgary continued to apply pressure and eventually stretched the lead all the way to seven runs, seemingly putting the game out of reach.
In tournament ball, however, no lead is safe until the final out.
The Raiders began chipping away before unleashing their biggest push in the bottom of the sixth.
Calgary’s defense opened the door with a pair of errors, and the Raiders wasted little time charging through it. Then Aaron Sebastien delivered the swing that completely changed the complexion of the game, driving a three-run home run to left field as part of a five-run, four-hit inning.
What had been a commanding Jays advantage had suddenly become a 9–7 ballgame.
The momentum had shifted, the Raiders had life, and a game that appeared headed toward a comfortable Calgary victory had turned into a late-inning Williams Cup thriller.
The Jays bent, but they never broke.
They finally stopped the rally and secured the remaining outs to preserve the two-run victory.
Braeden Criddle went the distance for the Jays and earned the win. The southpaw worked six innings, surrendering nine hits and seven runs — five earned — while striking out two and walking one.
Steve McManus started for the Raiders and allowed four hits and two runs, one earned, over three innings while recording one strikeout without issuing a walk.
At the plate, Dunphy spearheaded the Jays attack with a 3-for-4 performance, helping Calgary build the cushion it would ultimately need. The Jays also turned a double play defensively.
For the Raiders, Sebastien delivered the biggest blow of the afternoon, finishing 1-for-3 with a team-high three RBIs courtesy of his sixth-inning homer. Cam Cote and Kyle Catling each collected two hits, while Scholten added the solo home run that helped keep Calgary within striking distance.
For much of the afternoon, the story appeared destined to be the Jays’ ability to steadily build separation.
By the final out, it had become a story of survival.
