We have created a new league for players 15 and under to transition to the Junior and Senior Leagues (60/90) programs. This Intermediate league will consist of 50 foot pitching distance and 70 foot base paths.

A Summer League has been designed to provide 12–13-year-old players with an opportunity to play in a new division. Greenfield Little League will offer a new division of baseball called "Little League Intermediate (50/70) Baseball." Teams in the new division will play on a field with a 50’ pitching mound distance and 70’ base paths. This new division offers a field size in between the current Major’s 46’ pitching distance and 60’ base paths (46/60) and the Juniors/Seniors 60’ 6” pitching distance and 90’ base paths (60/90), also used by High School and Major League Baseball.

This new Division will include players league age 11-12-13-14 years old.  Greenfield will still field major baseball and junior baseball teams, and players are able to play on both 50/70 and major baseball or 50/70 and junior baseball (depending on age) if interested.

Until now, 13-year-old players that had finished the Majors Division were expected to go from a 46’/60’ field to a 60’/90’ field in the Juniors program. This big adjustment held a 30’ jump in base paths and 14’ jump in pitching distance. It was believed that this may have deterred kids from continuing to play baseball beyond Majors. The new 50/70 division offers a bridge for 11-12-13 year old players and also offers a new baseball option for 11 and 12 year old players. This new division will allow base runners to lead off, so pitchers will learn to hold runners on and attempt to pick them off. The fences for the 50/70 division are assumed to be somewhat farther than the majors division at most little league facilities.

Just like the Majors division, Intermediate baseball will have an all-star team. There will also be District, State and Regional tournaments leading to a World Series in California.

The Board of Directors is working to determine the impact of this change on our current program, the players, the fields, and the number of Juniors and Majors teams we will have come Spring 2023. We will post more information and keep you updated as it becomes available.

The Board has used a mindful approach in considering these changes and we firmly believe that the new 50/70 division will, over time, provide more competitive playing opportunities for our players. Furthermore, an opportunity to learn advanced upper division skills and knowledge of the game will be emphasized at practice and during the season.

Here is a little bit of information about the introduction of the Intermediate League that GBA will be hosting.

The Intermediate (50/70) Baseball Division was initially introduced in 2013, as a pilot program for players league-age 11-13 -years old. It had been designed to utilize a 50-foot pitching distance and 70-foot base paths.

The division was also created to have post-season tournament opportunities, to include the Intermediate League World Series. The division offers a transition for players between the standard Little League field size (46-foot pitching distance and 60-foot base paths) and the Junior/Senior field size (60-foot, 6-inch pitching distance and 90-foot base paths).

Regular season players in the Little League Intermediate 50/70 Baseball Division have the opportunity to dual roster, (meaning he/she can play in the Little League Major Baseball Division during the same season. Achieving tournament eligibility is possible in either division, but a player must choose one division of play to participate in during the tournament season.)

Many of the Junior League rules are used, such as runners being permitted to lead off bases, runners are permitted to steal at any time, and an on-deck batter will be permitted.

The culmination of the International Tournament is the Intermediate (50/70) Baseball World Series, featuring teams from around the world. All expenses for the teams advancing to the World Series (travel, meals, and housing) are paid by Little League International.
