Larry Orr was a Saanich Peninsula icon and embodied everything that is great about Canadian minor hockey. His home-based skate shop was ground zero for skate sharpening for Peninsula Minor Hockey and the Peninsula Panthers. His shop was warm, welcoming, and chock-full of local hockey memorabilia. He may have even mentored a few NHL players along the way. In addition, Larry also ran an equipment exchange program out of the shop. This would typically be a special time of year, to have families that couldn't afford new equipment, come in and exchange their gear for equipment that fit.
When players and parents departed Larry’s shop on any given day, they likely left with three things:
- a big smile from spending a few minutes with Larry
- razor-sharp skates, and;
- a fresh piece of Double-Bubble chewing gum - Larry’s signature parting gift
Larry had a huge impact on our community that will be felt for generations to come. His volunteer hours and dedication to the hockey community will never be forgotten.
We hope you enjoy the tournament weekend with us and enjoy a little Double Bubble.
~ Thanks for joining us and Good Luck to all the teams ~
